Keep the fire burning!
Can coffee cost more than caviar? The answer is no, but it's not as far off as you might think. The world of coffee is a fascinating place full or passionate and creative people.
I actually didn't drink coffee at all when I was younger, I had my first cappuccino last year (believe it or not).
One thing that did draw my attention to coffee back in the day was the famous Kopi Luwak, the famous coffee that is "pre-digested" by the Asian palm civet and costs over € 200 per kg.
For my project I am working closely with Mondo del Caffe who are passionate and innovative in what they do - and I was also introduced to Jacu Bird coffee which costs around € 800 per kg, caviar is still more expensive setting you back around € 1,800 per kg.
Coffee and circularity?
Coffee is so deeply rooted in our daily lives, with the Northern Europe being quite dominant
- Finland
- Norway
- Iceland
- Denmark
- Netherlands
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Belgium
- Luxembourg
- Canada
- Bosnia and Herzegovina

This means that we have tonnes of waste, as an example Finland generates about 12kg of coffee waste per person - per year! Think about all the packaging and transportation...and waste (that we now know how to handle!).
My closest partner Mondo del Caffe is working with an old but new concept - similar to the milkman approach where they sell coffee in glass bottles - extending the life of the packaging which is awesome!
One really innovative thing they do is also to make furniture from jute bags.
Jute bags are used to transport coffee, they are made from environmentally friendly materials and are very durable. In the coffee business they are largely available to all roasters.
During the week I also had a meeting with a roaster, more updates to follow on that shortly, but I can say that there is a great interest out there for my solution and product.
So what's next?
As this week was low on the visible progress side, I hope that over the next 2 weeks some things will progress and I will be able to give more visible updates.
I am eagerly awaiting the article that InfoGreen will publish, I have several Zooms planned - and I hope to post some awesome new pictures during next week because we have some big things going on!
Stay tuned, and once again thank you for the continuous support, and who knows - maybe one day I'll fulfil my dream and open the world's most exclusive espresso bar serving just Kopi Luwak and Jacu Bird-coffee.
