KD's World Tour, Chapter 22: Ukraine, including Chernobyl
We continue through Eastern and Central Europe in Chapter 22 of my virtual World Tour using Google Street View! Here an active yard surrounds a country house in Korosten.
Zhytomyr was formed in 884 and is traditional home to the Polish minority in Ukraine. Here we have a Ukranian soldier enjoying the Teteriv River for a moment.
Homer Simpson is here too.
Kids play at the local museum.
Young love!
Kiev is Ukraine's largest town with a population of 3 million. Kiev dates back to 482 AD and is one of Eastern Europe's oldest cities. This is St. Sophia's Cathedral, one of the many gorgeous churches in Kiev.
Another (name unknown)...
Of course what really caught my eye was the Kiev wall art.
Incredibly, Google Street View visited Chernobyl. These images speak for themselves.
Finally, we come to the amazing and infamous Duga Radar Station, near Chernobyl, Ukraine. The station was one of two "over the horizon" radar systems that the USSR used to track potential incoming missiles from the U.S. It operated from 1976 to 1989, and was known by radio operators around the world as the "Russian Woodpecker" because of the annoying sound it generated around the globe on the radio band. If you go on Youtube you can find some great video of people climbing this monstrous grid of metal.
