Kemper Museum Receives $100,000 from the Andy Warhol Foundation

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art $100,000 in support of the upcoming exhibit “Virginia Jaramillo: Principal of Equivalence.”

“Jaramillo’s work spans decades, and this is the first major retrospective to recognize the work of the innovative 83-year-old Latinx artist,” stated the announcement.

Originally from Los Angeles and currently residing in New York, the artist first showed in Kansas City in the 1970s at the Douglas Drake Gallery. Jaramillo’s work was also featured in Kemper Museum’s debut exhibition in 1994.

“Tracing the impact of Jaramillo’s practice, the exhibition will feature early examples that pushed the depth of the painted surface to its very limits, innovations in the centuries-old practice of handmade papermaking, and recent large-scale paintings in which Jaramillo engages notions of antiquity and architectural ruin,” said Erin Dziedzic , director of curatorial affairs for Kemper Museum, in the announcement.

The exhibition will be on view from June 2 through Aug. 27, 2023. In conjunction with the exhibition, Yale University Press will release a full-color catalog, edited by Dziedzic and including contributions by Matthew Jeffrey Abrams, Barbara Calderón , Elisabeth Kirsch and Courtney J. Martin. For more information, www.kemperart.org

Art and Comraderie Flourish at Holsum Studios in the West Bottoms

It’s easy to overlook the old Holsum Food Products building in Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms. Where stockyards and slaughterhouses once reigned, ancient brick buildings stand cheek by jowl.

The venerable structure at 12th and Santa Fe streets boasts a storied history, including a stint as a haunted house frequented by Halloween revelers. In recent years it has joined the ranks of art studios that have sprouted in the district. Now known as Holsum Studios, it bubbles with the creative energy of 45 artists.

Visit kcstudio.org to read more about this affordable, nurturing destination for artists. Holsum Studios will hold its annual Open Studios event from 5 to 9 p.m. April 14.
