Kazakhstan Protests Update

Kazakhstan Protests Update

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has declared a two-week state of emergency in the Central Asian nation's biggest city Almaty and in the western Mangistau province where recent protests have turned violent, his office said early on Wednesday.

A 11pm to 7am curfew in these areas is in effect, and travel to these areas from the surrounding regions has been blocked. Other measures introduced include:

  • Restrictions on the movement of residents within these cities/regions;
  • Increased ID checks and vehicle searches by police;
  • A ban on demonstrations and other mass gatherings;
  • Restrictions on the sale of some medicines and alcohol;

If you’re in a city in Kazakhstan which has seen protests from 2 to 4 January, you should avoid mass gatherings, limit your movements and travel, including working from home where possible, and follow government instructions.
