Kayla’s colourful world

Kayla’s colourful world

Less than a year ago, Kayla took up painting for the first time. Since then she has produced a series of glorious artworks inspired by the animal and plant worlds. Kayla paints twice a week at Sunnyfield’s Parramatta Community Hub. The subjects and colours are her choice, with support from the Hub team.

Her work uses strong, bright colours. Kayla is passionate about colour and a Sunnyfield Finance team member, Simone introduced her to the concept of the colour wheel soon after she began painting.

The Parramatta Community Hub is ideal for painting: light-filled and looking over green landscape. It is a contemporary extension to a heritage gatehouse in Parramatta Park. The paints, canvasses and paintbrushes in the Hub are bought through Sunnyfield fundraising activities. Kayla buys the paints herself at Aldi.

She has taken on the responsibility of budgeting and shopping for the Hub more generally, including Lego for activities and kitchen supplies. She also selects purchases for other clients in the Hub and for her family: in June she was already planning Christmas presents. She has learnt budgeting skills to make the most of the funds. Sunnyfield has been part of Kayla’s life for 10 years.

More recently, one of her three cats has been part of the life of the Hub as well. Ginger comes once a month as a therapy animal. “Everyone likes having Ginger here,” the Hub’s Service Manager, Davina says. Kayla is ambitious for her artwork. What would she do if it made her rich? “If I got rich I would buy another cat!” Kayla laughs.
