Katherine Johnson was a trailblazer in the field of mathematics and a pioneering computer programmer who made significant contributions to the U.S. space program. Despite facing numerous obstacles and challenges as a black woman in a male-dominated field, she persevered and rose to prominence as a leader in her field.
Johnson was born in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and showed a talent for mathematics at an early age. She went on to study mathematics and French at West Virginia State College, and later became one of the first African American students to integrate West Virginia University's graduate school.
In 1953, Johnson joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which would later become NASA, as a computer. Her work involved using complex mathematical calculations to solve problems in aerodynamics and space flight, and she quickly became known for her exceptional skills and attention to detail.
Johnson's work on the space program was critical to the success of several key missions, including the 1961 flight of astronaut Alan Shepard and the 1969 moon landing. She worked closely with other pioneering figures in the field, including astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, and her calculations were essential to the success of their missions.

In 2015, Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, in recognition of her contributions to the space program. She has also been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and films, and her life and work continue to inspire new generations of young people, particularly young women and girls of color.
Katherine Johnson's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination, and a reminder of the importance of representation in science and technology. As we celebrate Black Tech History Month, let us take a moment to recognize and honor the contributions of this pioneering mathematician and computer programmer, and to inspire a new generation of black tech pioneers.
