Karma Has No Deadline!

Karma Has No Deadline!

You don't have to be Hindu or Buddhist to understand how Karma can affect our professional lives. Here are two of personal life examples of how Karma has shown up in my professional life:

Case #1

2003: after weeks of job-hunting, I walked into the office of an international organization that had a vibrant arts program and asked how I could get involved. The manager of the arts program walked out to see me and gave me some valuable pointers that took me down a path that would forever change my life trajectory.

2011: I was a board member of an arts NGO and I was asked to sit on the interview panel to recruit someone to fill a senior position within the NGO. In walked the same arts program manager from 8 years ago to interview for that position. He remembered me.

_____________

Case #2

2015: a female student walked into my office asking me for guidance on a research topic for her undergraduate dissertation. She nagged me for weeks until I found an hour in my day to give her a menu of potential topics she could explore. She picked a topic, wrote and submitted her dissertation, I never heard from her again, until……

2018: My organization is currently working with the local government to implement some key activities in districts across the country. When I went to introduce our work to a new district, in walked that same female student, from 4 years ago, who so happened to be the key contact within the local government for our activities. Our work couldn’t go forward without her endorsement.

_______________

The point: When it comes to Karma we all have equal opportunity. Karma has no deadline - you get served what you deserve. Imagine if that arts program manager didn't take the time to see me - imagine if I had been rude to the female student and not taken the time to help her. Be humble and respectful to everyone. You never know who that person will be to you in the future.

What's your Karma story and what did you learn from it?
