Kargil Vijay Diwas - Remembering the Heroes of the Kargil War

Every year, on 26th July, India observes the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the historic victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. Kargil Vijay Diwas | Kargil War history

Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, is an annual commemoration observed in India on July 26th. It celebrates the victory of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan during the Kargil War, which took place between May and July 1999.

The Kargil War was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict arose when around 5,000 Pakistani troops and militants infiltrated into Indian territory, orchestrated by the then Pakistan Army chief General Pervez Musharraf, without the knowledge of then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and occupied strategic positions in the high-altitude areas along the Line of Control (LOC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan.

The war caught India by surprise as the infiltration was seen as a violation of the Shimla Agreement, signed in 1972 to maintain peace between the two countries. The intrusions aimed to cut off the crucial highway connecting Srinagar to Leh, posing a significant threat to India's security and access to Ladakh.

The Kargil War was fought between May 8, 1999, and July 26, 1999, against intruders from Pakistan who had crossed the Line of Control into Indian territory during the winters of 1998. After transcending to the Indian territory, the Pakistani intruders had occupied fortified defences overlooking the NH 1A in Kargil's Drass and Batalik Sectors of Ladakh region with a nefarious aim of dominating all military and civil movement on the highway.

The Kargil War had three phases - infiltration by Pakistan to occupy strategic locations, identifying and responding to Pakistani infiltration, and battles between Indian and Pakistani forces. Pakistan infiltrated into several sectors, including Mushkoh Valley, Marpo La ridgeline in Dras, Kaksar near Kargil, Batalik sector, Chorbatla sector, and Siachen's Turtok sector.
