Karen O: Party with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The South Korean-born American singer was always the quiet kid. She surprised everyone when she transformed into the antic-filled, wild lead singer of the indie rock band?Yeah Yeah Yeahs.?From tonguing microphones to falling headfirst offstage (and nearly breaking her back), Karen O is like no other woman in the indie rock genre.

O grew up split between two worlds. She was born in Seoul, South Korea to her American-Polish father and South Korean mother. However, her family moved to Englewood, New Jersey, where O spent her childhood. She credits her rebellious, dual-personality to her parents’ unconventional match.

“When she [O’s mother] started dating my dad, it was highly controversial,” O said in an interview with?The Guardian. “He was teaching English in Seoul and was on a bus that she walked on to. It was love at first sight for him: he took the same bus every day, hoping she’d walk back on.”
