Karel's HealthTech Chronicles #5 - 4 Visions of New Healthcare

Hello dear readers, today I want to share with you some of my visions of how healthtech can change the healthcare industry as we know it. I describe below 4 strong visions I see coming. All the necessary steps have already begun to happen. Solutions are on the way. I am so happy to know already many people who are creating this future together. Let's have a look at these visions and let's exchange opinions on how precise I am in their definition.

1. Patient Services - Uberization Comes to Healthcare, Now! ??

Wohooo, this is a big thing. We are going to see the things in healthcare that we know from the industry of services. Do you know names like Facebook, Google, Apple, Uber, Booking, Revolut, and many more? All of them will try to come into healthcare and they will bring services we could never imagine. Let's create some examples.

Imagine you are in need of some treatment. You are sitting at home thinking about how to find the right doctor. Hm, you open an app, define your request and... you get a map with doctors who can provide exactly the treatment you need. Oh, amazing, you also see some patient feedback there. You choose the offer you like and you reserve your spot there instantly. Once you get the confirmation, you get all the information you need remotely. Do you need a video call? No problem, either right now or tomorrow. The world of the fully informed patient arrives. And the world of a new kind of service.

Do you want a digital companion for you? No problem, you have it on your cell. All your health data, visual diagnostics, diagnoses... Wait, do you need some recommendation on how to behave, how to secure your health? Here you are, individually customized plans just for you.

Are you ready to pay for the medical service? Let's try some international clinic and explore the possibilities of medical tourism. The map with the offers is the same as in the first paragraph but much wider. The whole planet.

Do you need drugs or supplements? Suggested by AI, confirmed by human, in minutes or the latest hours. When do you want it? Now? Not a problem, drone delivery in two hours. Tomorrow? Great, check the availability and prices in pharmacies around you.

Are you a patient with a chronic disease? Well, we have some great plans for you on how to minimize the impact on your life, make your health stronger, and stop the progression of the disease.

The new services will redefine the relationships between patients and medical staff. It will be fascinating to observe how.

2. Another World, a New World We Are Going to Be Able to Heal Ourselves In

Virtual reality, a typical example of an innovation that needs a long time to be fully implemented in routine operations. But this should not be assessed as a reason for scepticism. It just needs time for its development.

The point is, with the virtual world we get a chance to create another world, another environment for our healing. Technology is almost ready. There will come a moment when we will not be able to distinguish between the real world and a virtual one.

The world and its perception are about the senses. The virtual world can set new limits for our senses. We can feel differently, sense smells, movements, touches. And of course, we will see completely new worlds. Let's be more concrete about what this means. If a patient goes through rehabilitation, for instance after shoulder surgery, the moves can be limited. A patient reaches a certain level when trying to move the hand higher. This perception of that limit in virtual reality is different. If a patient exercises in a virtual environment, then comes the surprise of reaching a higher position of the hand. We can call it a changed reality. Through the modification of our perception, we are able to reach heights we could never reach in real life. And more is to come. Psychosomatics. Mental tools. As I say, a different reality, a different world. We are not ready to see what comes. Maybe some of the thinkers who see the metaverse coming.

3. Diagnostics Paradise of Visual Information and Their Analysis ??

We already know it. Visual information is a great source of information. The good news is that all the visual information can be translated into a sequence of zeroes and ones. And it is the language of machines so that they are able to fully read it. And if there are zeroes and ones, it means that it is exact information. Therefore, we can fully rely on their?interpretations.

Do we have some examples of precursors of this visual paradise? Of course. Radiology and automated assessments of X-rays. Dermatology and skin diagnostics. Chronic wounds and tracking of their progression. And we are just at the beginning.

What comes next? The combination of visual information with additional dimensions. Like time. To see and analyze the progression of conditions. And the combination with AI analyses. These are going to move the frontier of diagnostics far beyond our current imagination.

4. Predictive Medicine Created via Data Analysis ??

Machines are able to process and analyze data much faster and in a much wider context than humans. This brings a number of advantages. We are able to compare healthcare facilities and identify the best practices. We are able to predict processes like the risk of hospital-acquired infections. We are able to manage the triage and treatment capacities. We can understand chronic diseases much deeper thanks to the analysis of data from millions of patients.

And here we come to the very core - predictive medicine. We will recognize the first signals much sooner and much more precisely. It is something like a weather forecast. But it is about Prevention 2.0. Or maybe we should say Predictive Prevention.

What happens when you combine all this with gene therapies, with biologics, with new tools for mental health, with new approaches in psychosomatics, and more? I don't know all the details about what we can expect. But I know for sure that we are standing just before the new era of medicine.

Stay tuned for these exciting developments in Karel's HealthTech Chronicles. Your thoughts and insights are always welcome as we embark on this journey of reimagining healthcare.
