Karel's Healthtech Chronicles #3 - The Hospital Innovation Unit: Understanding Our Role

I'm eager to shed light on the role of our Hospital Innovation Unit – that's the title of our team. We operate within a chain of seven private hospitals in the Czech Republic. Our primary goal is to bring innovations, especially digital solutions, into our hospitals and integrate them seamlessly into daily operations.

The Hospital Innovation Unit comprises three members, each possessing unique expertise. Let’s explore the strategic essence of our operations.

The healthcare innovation landscape is undergoing significant transformation. The pioneering years are behind us, making way for increased emphasis on competency. If one aspires to innovate in healthcare, a foundation in hospital operations, medicine, and the industry itself is invaluable. Fortunately, our team boasts a blend of extensive managerial experience from various levels, medical know-how, and an invaluable ingredient: passion.

Speaking of competence, it’s a layered understanding. It involves grasping hospital procedures, comprehending reimbursement principles, having some medical background—in essence, being a hospital insider. Furthermore, maintaining relationships with doctors and nurses is pivotal. Yet, this only constitutes half the needed expertise. We must also familiarize ourselves with the other hemisphere: healthtech innovators, startups, and scale-ups. Marrying these two worlds results in an effective Hospital Innovation Unit.

Now, let's delve into the specifics of our activities:

1. Scouting

We are continuously searching for tangible healthtech use cases. While there were fewer in the past, there's been an explosion of them recently, akin to a rollercoaster ride. Amid this surge, we also encounter the 'innovation trap': an overflow of ideas with only a handful translating into actual applications. We've become more discerning in evaluating what's promising. Venturing internationally has also become indispensable given the burgeoning trend of digital healthtech solutions.

2. Cataloguing – Building a Database

Identified solutions are catalogued in our growing database. This database serves as a reservoir of prospective use cases, becoming increasingly crucial as submissions multiply.

3. Initial Assessment by HIU

Our role entails identifying promising use cases, collating comprehensive details, conducting preliminary evaluations, and understanding them holistically. Maintaining the trust of our medical peers is paramount; thus, we emphasize introducing only pertinent cases, which demands thorough research and analysis.

4. Medical Innovation Board

Potential innovations are presented to the Medical Innovation Board, comprising medical experts, doctors, and nurses. Their insights and green lights are instrumental in progressing to pilot tests or full-scale implementations.

5. System Change Management - HIU’s Big Picture

Upon selecting innovations, we visualize their systemic impact within hospitals. More on this will be covered in subsequent editions of Karel's HealthTech Chronicles. Given our positioning within a holding company, evaluating innovations also requires a top-down approach.

6. Piloting or Implementation

The success of any pilot or implementation hinges on leadership. We endeavor to identify medical leaders for each innovation. Partnering directly with innovation suppliers facilitates efficient onboarding and invigorates the innovation trajectory.

7. Paperwork

The digital healthcare footprint is expanding, warranting meticulous attention to legal and regulatory aspects. We're tasked with patient information, GDPR compliance, legal provisions, cybersecurity, among others.

8. Financing

Navigating the financial intricacies of innovations is challenging, primarily as they don't top the reimbursement list. Collaborating with our management board and financial teams is pivotal. Yet, this challenge nudges us towards scouting only the most promising solutions.

9. Evaluation Process

We remain committed to launching innovations with tangible benefits, but it's imperative to verify that our implementations yield the anticipated results. An objective evaluation is non-negotiable; if results aren't achieved, we phase out the innovation.

10. Awareness

Publicizing our efforts is integral to our mission. Emphasizing that digital care is transforming healthcare and that we are at its forefront is our clarion call.
