Making Connections
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). This disease causes the immune system to attach the nerve fibers and myelin sheathing surrounding the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord. Patients with MS go through relapsing-remitting courses of the disease meaning symptoms can last for days or weeks at a time over the course of several years.
Symptoms include:
·????????Fatigue
·????????Tingling
·????????Numbness
·????????Unsteady gait
·????????Blurred or total loss of vision
·????????Weakness
MS may be diagnosed as benign, primary progressive, or secondary progressive depending on the symptoms and frequency of illness.
The MS coalition and MS Society chose the 2022 MS Day theme based on the fact that the disease attacks connective nerves and tissues. Not only do nerves suffer from symptoms, but those with MS may struggle to connect with their peers and those who do not understand the scope of this illness.

World MS Day is an opportunity to connect on many levels as people gather for education and to take action for change that helps to connect the general public with patients with MS and patients with practitioners who may provide insight or donors with organizations who fund medical research.
World MS Day
Beginning in 2010, World MS Day was created as a beacon of hope for those with MS and a point of connection between the public and education on the disease. Inspired by the incredible accomplishments of Lori Schneider – the first person with MS to climb Mount Everest – who fought for change and to inspire other patients. From then on, World MS Day became a global event highlighting the struggles of those with MS and the fact that while they may have this illness, they are inspirations to us all.
