Kanthal’s next move: Fossil-free cement via ELECTRA project

Hello LinkedIn Community,?

A fresh edition of Kanthal Chronicles is here, and we are thrilled to share an exciting update about our involvement in a project that could change the future of the cement, lime, and pulp industries. ELECTRA project— a €20 million initiative, partly funded by the EU's Horizon Europe program, bringing together 17 partners across eight countries to pioneer groundbreaking, electricity-based technologies for the cement, lime, and pulp sectors.?

At the core of this transformative effort is Kanthal’s expertise in electric industrial heating. Our mission? To eliminate the reliance on fossil fuels and significantly reduce CO2 emissions in these energy-intensive industries. Hear from Jesper Ejenstam, our Vice President and Head of R&D, on how Kanthal is leading the way with innovative electric heating solutions.

"Kanthal's participation in the ELECTRA project is critical," says Jesper Ejenstam. The cement, lime, and pulp industries are among the largest contributors to CO2 emissions globally, mainly due to the calcination process, which heats calcium carbonate to over 1,000°C (1,832°F) using fossil fuels.

Overcoming technical roadblocks?

Kanthal is at the forefront, pushing the limits of what’s possible by exploring new materials, such as ceramic elements, to create durable, efficient, and scalable electric heating systems.

The challenge is enormous: How do we achieve industrial-scale, fossil-free cement production? "Heating materials to over 1,200°C (2,192°F) without fossil fuels is uncharted territory," Ejenstam remarks. Aligning innovation with sustainability?

This project is more than a technological breakthrough; it aligns perfectly with Kanthal’s mission to support a more sustainable future. “Our goal is to empower industries to reduce their carbon footprints significantly,” says Ejenstam. “And we see tremendous opportunities for growth as we help drive this change.”?

Collaborating for a greener future?

ELECTRA project’s success relies on collaboration. With 17 partners across the value chain, from researchers to technology providers, ELECTRA is more than a project; it is a bold step towards a sustainable future, where innovative technology meets environmental responsibility.?

That's indeed impressive! The journey toward decarbonization is proving to be longer and more complex than initially anticipated. Interested in the evolving role of fossil coal materials.. Any insights on the primary source of the remaining CO2 emissions after electrification?

This very interesting and so complementary to our approach - we would love to present you our demo plants in operation in Juelich and show your team, how to store electrified heat at 1000°C and how to discharge it at highest performance enabling competitive electrification by exploiting the volatility of power prices and/or renewables behind the meter
