Kansas City Chiefs: A Golden Opportunity for Wyandotte County
As Kansas lawmakers gear up for a crucial session on June 18, the Kansas Chamber of Commerce is backing legislation to lure the Kansas City Chiefs to Kansas using the STAR bond economic development tool. This initiative, described as a "once in a lifetime opportunity" by Kansas Chamber President Alan Cobb, represents a significant chance for Kansas to become the permanent home of the Chiefs.
The proposed bill aims to expand STAR bonds to be available for professional sports teams, making it an ideal fit for the high-traffic attraction that the Chiefs would bring. House Speaker Dan Hawkins and Senate President Ty Masterson have already reached out to Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, emphasizing the strategic importance of keeping the franchise rooted in Kansas City.
Amid this legislative push, I encourage the Chiefs to consider Wyandotte County, particularly the 200-acre assemblage at the corner of K7 & Parallel Parkway. Here’s why:
Wyandotte County offers a strategic location with excellent connectivity and infrastructure. The 200-acre site at K7 & Parallel Parkway is ideally positioned to support a world-class stadium. This area has the potential to become a hub for sports and entertainment, attracting fans and tourists from across the region and beyond.
A new stadium in Wyandotte County would be a monumental economic driver. The STAR bond incentives are designed to support large-scale projects that boost tourism and local economies. By choosing Wyandotte County, the Chiefs can leverage these incentives to create a state-of-the-art facility that not only enhances the team's brand but also stimulates local businesses and creates jobs.
Recent polls indicate robust support among Kansans for bringing the Chiefs to the state, with 63% favoring the move and nearly 60% supporting the use of STAR bonds to facilitate it. This widespread backing underscores the community's enthusiasm and readiness to embrace the Chiefs, ensuring a vibrant fan base and strong community engagement.
The Kansas Legislature, supported by the Kansas Chamber and a coalition of lobbyists, is poised to amend the STAR bond policy to make this vision a reality. The initiative has drawn substantial political support, with lawmakers prepared to present the Chiefs with a compelling offer during the special session. The formation of the nonprofit Scoop and Score further exemplifies the coordinated effort to promote and support this project.
The proposed revisions to the STAR bond policy include extending the repayment period to 30 years and utilizing sales tax proceeds from alcohol sales at the venue. These changes reflect a long-term vision for sustainable financing, ensuring that the project can deliver lasting economic benefits to the community.
The opportunity to move the Kansas City Chiefs to Wyandotte County, supported by robust incentives and community backing, represents a transformative moment for both the franchise and the region. The 200-acre site at K7 & Parallel Parkway offers the perfect canvas for a state-of-the-art stadium that can serve as a cornerstone for economic and community growth.

5 个月I have heard this - interesting idea. I worked in KCK 20 years ago as a journalist and the hope was always to bring development from the west inward to the community. I'm so sad this has not happened. Downtown KCK is prime real estate also. It's simply unrealized because of negative, racist ideologies - most of which are false - about KCK's safety.
