Kang'ethe US murder trial, Haiti windfall and teachers' defiance

Teachers are outraged after Kuppet abruptly ended their strike without consultation. Meanwhile, Kenyan police in Haiti face payment delays despite hefty allowances. On the legal front, a Kenyan fugitive has been extradited to the US after fleeing murder charges. We cover this and more in today's edition of the Daily Briefing. Happy reading!

Kuppet's strike U-turn infuriates teachers

Secondary school teachers are furious after Kuppet abruptly called off their strike after an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Many feel betrayed and say union leaders ignored protocol. Despite being the only body authorised to end industrial action, the National Governing Council (NGC) wasn't consulted. Some branch leaders are now calling for the national officials to resign. They argue that the decision was rushed and undermined the teachers' efforts. The strike had gained momentum and many are sceptical about the promises made by the TSC. ?

Sh295,000 pay boost for Kenyan police in Haiti

Kenyan police officers in Haiti on a peacekeeping mission receive a monthly allowance of Sh295,000 on top of their regular salaries. But payment delays have led to growing frustration, with only July's allowance paid so far. Despite this, they've received additional military equipment, including 34 armoured vehicles, to help them fight armed gangs. The mission, backed by $109 million from the US, faces challenges including equipment shortages and morale problems. Kenyan officials are assuring timely payments, but concerns remain among officers and their families. The mission continues to focus on gang-controlled towns in Haiti. ?

Kang'ethe: Midnight jet, fast flight

Murder suspect Kevin Kang'ethe was secretly extradited from Kenya to the US last Friday. US officials arrived in Nairobi under the cover of night, and Kenyan authorities quickly handed him over. Handcuffed and shackled, he was loaded onto a private FBI jet and flown to Boston. The covert operation was meticulously planned, with Kang'ethe's escape from the Muthaiga police station adding to the urgency. Once in the US, he was handed over to the Massachusetts State Police. Kang'ethe now faces trial for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, and his pre-trial hearing is set for November 5.
