  1. Time-boxing: Scrum sprints have a defined start and stop date, while Kanban is an ongoing process. This means that Scrum teams have more structure and accountability, whereas Kanban teams have more flexibility.
  2. Team Roles: In Scrum, team roles are clearly defined, including the product owner, engineering team, and Scrum master. In Kanban, there are no formal roles, and teams are self-organized.
  3. Board Management: Kanban boards are used throughout the entire project lifecycle, while Scrum boards are cleared and recycled after each sprint. Kanban boards are more flexible in terms of tasks and timing, allowing for tasks to be reprioritized, reassigned, or updated as needed. Scrum boards, on the other hand, have a set number of tasks and a strict deadline to complete them.
  4. Backlog Maintenance: In Kanban, everything can potentially be on the board, which can lead to clutter and overload of information. Tickets can stay on the board forever, losing their importance over time. Scrum's weekly grooming ensures that the backlog is groomed and tickets are picked based on priority, leading to better collaboration and planning.
  5. Plan Deliveries: Scrum plans in sprints, not days, which gives the team more breathing room while maintaining a clear deadline. Kanban allows for more flexibility in terms of delivery, but may not provide the same level of accountability and planning.
  6. Reporting: Scrum provides better reporting on what was planned vs. what was delivered, allowing for continuous improvement over time. This can benefit all stakeholders involved, resulting in overall better deliverability and planning for future sprints.


Conclusion:

When deciding between Kanban and Scrum, it's important to consider your team's unique needs and preferences. While Kanban provides flexibility, Scrum provides structure and accountability. Ultimately, the choice between these two agile frameworks will depend on your team's culture, goals, and project requirements. Regardless of which framework you choose, both Kanban and Scrum can help your team increase productivity and streamline your workflow.
