Kamala Harris: A Historic Journey to Leadership

Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, etched her name in history as the 49th Vice President of the United States. In President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration, she broke barriers as the first woman, the first Black American, and the first Asian American to hold the post.

Her ascent to the vice presidency followed a distinguished career in public service. Harris served as U.S. Senator from California from 2017 to 2021 and as the state’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2017.

Her political acumen was evident early on when her compelling speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention elevated her national profile. In 2014, she married attorney Douglas Emhoff, solidifying a personal partnership that paralleled her political endeavors.

Her Senate run in 2016, spurred by Barbara Boxer’s retirement, focused on immigration reform, criminal justice, and women’s rights. Winning the seat, she made history as the first Indian American and only the second Black woman in the Senate.

Her incisive questioning style during hearings, particularly towards figures like Attorney General Jeff Sessions, highlighted her prosecutorial background and drew national attention.

Harris’s memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, released in 2019, coincided with her announcement for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Her campaign drew early interest, especially during debates with Biden over race-related issues. Although she eventually exited the race, her advocacy for social justice, notably after George Floyd died in 2020, reinforced her commitment to reform.

In a pivotal moment in August 2020, Biden selected Harris as his running mate. Her election as vice president marked another historic achievement. In office, she tackled complex issues, from immigration to voting rights, and emerged as a staunch defender of reproductive health care, particularly after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

As president of the Senate, Harris set a record with her tie-breaking votes, further showcasing her influence in legislative processes. In July 2024, following President Biden’s decision not to seek reelection, he endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination, affirming her status as a leading figure in American politics.

The reflection from Austin Isikhuemen

When this beautiful, brilliant American of Asian descent was nominated as running mate in 2020, it elicited massive rejoicing and hope in the United States. Kamala Harris is not only female, she is Americo-Asian-Caribean and the first such to be nominated to the number two position in the United States, a breath away from the Oval Office.

To say that the minorities in America were ecstatic is a gross understatement! Here, they surmised, was another affirmative action on steroids after the historic Obama Presidency !

Kamala’s suport for Joe Biden

Vice President Kamala has supported Joe Biden well. Her senatorial experience has shone brilliantly in the way she has been playing her role since her swearing-in four years ago.

Her forays into international diplomatic engagements have been impressive. There has been no controversy around her or in her relationship working with a man more than two decades older. She brought youthfulness, verve, and elegant feminity to the White House which would otherwise have been a staid affair.

Biden has done well. Together with Kamala, they showed America what leadership looks like with the way they handled the COVID-19 pandemic after the exit of the denier who eventually caught the disease.

Their global climate action and reuniting of the international community after Trump’s disastrous divisiveness and bumbling lack of understanding of the threat of global warming have been impactful.

Under the duo, the United States of America regained its position as the number one voice in global leadership reversing the isolationism that Trump had fostered for four testy years. Europe breathed a sigh of relief.

Age has taken its toll on Biden’s physical strength and coordination but his patriotism and altruism have never been in doubt. At 81, Biden is the oldest US President in history.

In Africa, they would be bringing him kola nuts to pray for the young sitting on his reclining chair, walking stick by his side. He deserves to rest after this term and, in my view, should just hand over to Kamala Harris now and take a bow. But the choice is his to make.

Biden’s nomination of Kamala to be Democratic Party nominee

Biden’s nomination of Kamala as his choice to be the Democratic Party nominee for the November Presidential election following his voluntary withdrawal from the race is well thought out.

I hope the majority of the party leaders and influential donors will support her to come out of their convention as the unanimous candidate. Kamala will not only beat Trump, she will revenge the Hillary Rodham Clinton defeat by a demagogue who lost the popular vote by three million and yet went on to become President.

Why am I excited at the prospects of a Kamala Harris Presidency in the United States?? This is because it will give the female folk, long relegated in Political affairs, a huge uplift. The reverberations that the shattering of this massive glass ceiling will cause would be heard around the world.

It will give our daughters, wives, and mothers hope and a sense of acceptance of the equality we have always mouthed but never really meant nor gave effect to.

I have seen women do the impossible and better men in many situations. Iyoba Idia of Benin Empire , Queen Amina of Zaria, and Margaret Thatcher of England. Closer home, Okpokhenlen my great mother’s exploits within her community is still remembered by many.

So is the steady forbearance and great insights that my better half has brought to my nuclear family’s progress. Anyone who didn’t read His Excellency Senator Bukola Saraki’s tribute to his mother on the back page of Thisday of Sunday 22 July 2024 should do so.

Women’s uncanny knack for accurate intuition is unparalleled. No one can dispute the assertion that the world would have been a better place without fratricidal wars were capable women in charge in most countries.

A former Attorney General, Prosecutor, Senator, and Vice President, Vice President Kamala Harris comes with intimidating credentials and a public service track record. However, there will be the inevitable challenge of female-hating, powerful, chauvinist men in her party. Read more at https://aclasses.org/kamala-harris/
