# ?? Kali Linux 2024.2 Release ??

A little later than usual, but Kali 2024.2 is here! ?? The delay was due to changes under the hood, which required a lot of focus. The community helped immensely, adding new packages, updating, and fixing bugs! If you're reading this, Kali 2024.2 is ready for download or upgrade.

## ?? What's New? ??

Summary of the Changelog since 2024.1 release:

- t64 - Future package compatibility for 32-bit platforms

- Desktop Changes - GNOME 46 & Xfce improvements

- New Tools - 18 new tools, and countless updates

### ?? The t64 Transition ??

Kali Linux, a rolling distribution based on Debian testing, quickly incorporates changes from Debian. Our QA and automation ensure smooth transitions. However, the t64 transition required extra attention.

What is t64?

t64 refers to a 64-bit time_t type, preventing the Year 2038 issue for 32-bit architectures. This change, impacting mainly ARM architectures (armhf and armel), required rebuilding numerous packages.

Impact on Users:

- Transition completed in kali-rolling on May 20th

- Users on amd64 or arm64 see many package upgrades with t64 suffixes

- ARM users (armel or armhf) must use apt full-upgrade for a smooth update

GNOME 46: The latest GNOME version, bringing a polished experience with updated themes and extensions.

Xfce Updates: Enhancements to Kali-Undercover and HiDPI modes, improving stability and minor bug fixes.

Kali 2024.2 introduces several community-submitted tools:

- autorecon - Multi-threaded network reconnaissance tool

- coercer - Automatically coerce a Windows server to authenticate on an arbitrary machine

- getsploit - Command line utility for searching and downloading exploits

- gowitness - Web screenshot utility using Chrome Headless
