Panel Discussion: Addressing Gun Violence Through Equitable Research and Collaboration

Gun violence is a public health crisis. In the face of this epidemic, the panel will discuss forward-thinking, collaborative approaches to gun violence research that help catalyze meaningful change. This discussion will include key pillars of rigorous, equitable health research, including defining groundbreaking research practices and meaningful community engagement.

This week the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention convened with leaders and practitioners from across the field of community violence intervention (CVI) at the CVI Action Plan Convening in Chicago, which took place on April 2, 2024. The goal of the convening was to strategize and formulate actionable next steps and draw insights and recommendations to advance our CVI initiatives.

Last month, the HAVI’s training and technical assistance (TTA) team traveled to Hartford, CT, to lead a Violence Prevention Professional Certification Training hosted by HAVI member Hartford Communities That Care, Inc. More than 20 violence prevention professionals (VPPs)—from cities including Hartford, New Haven, Baltimore, and Philadelphia—completed the five-day, 35-hour training. Brave Space is a gathering space open to all frontline violence intervention workers, whether employed at a HAVI member program or another violence intervention program. Created by and for frontline workers, it is a place to come together and share, learn, heal, and be brave.

The Trace: An Emerging Group of Researchers Is Changing Our Understanding of Gun Violence

March 8, 2024 — The Black and Brown Collective was founded in 2022 by Dr. Shani Buggs, a professor at the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis. The collective was formed to address inequities in the gun violence research community and supports around 30 Black and Latino gun violence researchers nationwide, providing tools for navigating the field as well as a sense of community. Its diversity is reflected in its work — and is strengthening the field itself.
