This week is Niue Language Week, and the theme is 'Leveki mo e Feaki e Vagahau Niue ma Anoiha – Protect and Nurture Vagahau Niue for the Future.' What does this mean to you???
As a proud Niuean woman who values my heritage, I’ve been on a journey to connect with my identity as a Niuean living far from home, especially as one of many in NZ who doesn’t speak the language. Revitalisation is essential, and many of my whānau are actively working to make learning the language easier for younger generations. Niuean Language week is a powerful reminder of what we have and what we risk losing if we don’t continue to engage in efforts to preserve our language and culture.?
What attracted you to join NHC??
I saw working at NHC as an opportunity to action equity. I wanted to work in a space that not only recognises equity as important but were also actively shaped by the interests of whānau.??
What do you enjoy most about working at NHC??
I love that my work is relevant and impactful to our communities. My role enables me to address the real needs of whānau and make a tangible difference in their lives, which is incredibly rewarding.?
Can you tell us about your role as a Research coordinator and how it contributes to the research and evaluation team at NHC??
I wear many hats – from event planning, coding, analysis and writing. More importantly, I connect with whānau, listen to their journeys and explore alongside them ways to improve the health system.??

Can you tell us about a rewarding project you’ve been involved in??
One of the most rewarding projects was our response during COVID-19. I worked alongside talented colleagues to rapidly organise events that engaged hard-to-reach whānau, providing vital support to the community during such a challenging time.?
How has working in a Māori organisation shaped your approach to your work??
Working in this space has highlighted both the similarities and differences between Māori and Pacific cultures. Navigating these nuances in a culturally safe environment has deepened my understanding of whānau and improved my engagement with them.?
What skills or qualities do you think are key to being successful in your role??
Building strong relationships is essential for effective collaboration. It’s all about connecting with whānau and working together to progress towards equity.??
Can you share a moment when you felt proud to be part of NHC and our moemoea??
I am proud of the work that we do to address the inequitable rates of Rheumatic fever in Aotearoa. The programs and research we carry out at NHC are rooted in the community, guided by evidence, and focused on making a meaningful, lasting impact on the lives of whānau.?
