Introduction

K-pop is an abbreviation of Korean pop music that blends across the Western and Korean music cultures. The characterization includes the use of trap, dance and rock elements that create a unique genre in music (Han, 2017). The music genre has gained popularity across the world, attributed to the quality work behind the vocals and the bands, as well as the blended cultural approach. From the art world approach, the analysis considers the skilful inputs of the bands, despite their diversities. The inputs guide the development, distribution and refining of the art to integrate the artistic ideas. The essay uses the art world approach to analyze the K-pop music genre.

The K-Pop Industry

The K-pop industry originates from South Korea but identifies with musical influences from electronic dance, rock, jazz and hip-hop. The use of bands is a characteristic, with most of these bands having over 20 members (Han, 2017). The role of bands from the musical perspective is to create the musical influence that creates a definitive musical approach in this sector. The bands are subject to dedicated and targeted training, which has integrated the use of language, style and lyrics to influence the musical impact. The Hallyu concept remains the background structure, with the industry capitalizing on musical trends to build the global Korean wave (The Art Newspaper, 2017). The use of foreign languages, such as English has built the attractiveness, with the industry capturing the international music trends. With the increased use of online platforms, the internationalization of the genre has seen the use of channels such as YouTube to grow the popularity. From a demographic perspective, the youth have become the majority of the audience. Since the genre emanates from South Korea, its internationalization has moved with fashion and Asian cultures or their close substitutes.

The Analysis using the Art World Approach

The artistic aspects of K-pop appreciate the use of creativity to align the music to the audiences, musical influence and the targeted impact. The art world approach appreciates the inclusion of all necessary elements that can define the genre while focusing on relevance, uniqueness and cultural approaches. Since the early 1990s, the mass production, sale and distribution of K-pop music saw the increased development of bands and the expansion to include genres that had musical influence on the world.? The rating of the musical influences depends on creativity that matches or surpluses the audience's expectations. Artwork is a vast field, with the convention serving as the unique feature to differentiate between the music genres. The extremes of K-pop go into taking up the cultural trends, which reflect pop culture and idea designs to reflect contemporary societies. Aspects such as unique haircuts, fashion and choreography have been transferred from each musical generation, with advancements considering the promotional intentions and the changes across the cultures (Fendler, 2019). Despite the typical differences across the generations, the ballad style and the lead single in hip-hop styles define the root and background of K-pop. Another typical input in building the conventions is rigorous training. The access, distribution and originality factors have created the expansion and distribution fronts for K pop. The “big three” corporations namely S.M Entertainment, J.Y.P Entertainment and Y.G. Entertainment remain the top corporations influencing K-pop music (Engaged Sociology, 2017). The role of these companies has been to set and maintain the standards of K-pop, based on the emerging trends and consumer needs. The development of consistency has been part of the benefits gained from having the companies as the primary sources of K-pop music. The companies train, develop and sustain the vocals, dance and choreographic designs to program the music towards a certain direction. From a language perspective, the companies have morphed the music to create a scientific approach to promote the quality of the musical outcomes (Yoon, 2018). The issue of production, cost sharing, profit generation and research can define the success of the genre across the world, despite having the Asian contexts.

In the description of K-pop, the use of group approaches to develop and build the art is inevitable. The stakeholders, collaborators and partisans in the industry have definitive roles that actually define the artistic approaches (Sions, 2018). Despite the fragmentation in the industry, the basic structure of the collaborators consists of artists and technical and support singers. The artists have the talent and ideologies that define the source of K-pop music. The packaging and presentation is important in determining the reception and the value developed for the music. From the artists, the technicians take over the role of creating the influence, based on the training of vocals and lyrics. The technical considers the contemporary issues that define the music industry to ensure the organization and management of the creations of the artists (Han, 2017). The last part of the collaborators is the support singers that are part of the K-pop strategy. They are the sources of artistic devices, messages and tones. The combination of the three collaborators has been crucial in defining the K pop, even with the increased use of other parties within the production and distribution channels.?

The popularity of K-pop is attributed to the musical influence and the cultural integration in its development. The use of the internet, the creation of scientific inputs, cross-cultural insights and language development remain the key influencers of the music genre. With the internet, it has been possible to reach the world, with collaborators by focusing on packaging and promoting the music to meet local needs (Yoon, 2018). The connectivity across the world has emanated from the engagements between local and international companies. Aspects such as globalization have favoured the expansion of K-pop music, with social and cultural values attracting quality developments in creativity and presentation (Yoon, 2018). The K-pop industry has engaged in influential projects to promote its role in the global music world. For example, the BTS, which is South Korea’s bestselling boy band launched five global public art projects, focusing on attracting global art and sensations in the music industry. Such projects have encouraged the appreciation of the art behind K-pop and influenced the changes to match the demands and sustain its relevance.

The judgment perspective collects the ideologies, opinions and insights from the consumers. Art entails creativity and the consumers have different reactions to the creativity. The role of the companies that push K-pop music is to deploy the scientific approach in collecting consumer opinions and incorporating them into the strategies (The Art Newspaper, 2017). For example, the “big three” companies have been sources of data on the musical influence and the approaches that can lead to popularity. Even before the music hits the international scene, local opinions have remained part of the judgmental concepts for K-pop. Factors such as the consistency of the musical approaches have seen the industry being labelled as rigid (Sions, 2018). The rigidity aspect emanates from the compassion of genres from other regions, such as the Western region, that have consistently shifted their musical arts to fit the social changes.

In summary, the artistic approach looks into the role of the music genre, approaches and management in managing the various aspects of the song. The success of K-pop, based on the art world approach, comes from the analysis of the resources, collaborators, conventions, distribution and judgment. These aspects relate the creativity from the artists to the market reactions, while considering all the requirements within the chain. The primary evaluation indicates the role of managing the creativity concepts to ensure that the genre maintains consistency and captures the cross-cultural aspects that define its existence. The commercialization of music has created the need to integrate the market reactions in setting the pace for management. Access to the internet, connections between local and international companies and sustained quality have been influential in the success of the k pop music across the world.
