Jyoti Bisht: Making a difference with passion and discipline at Amazon.
Meet Capt Jyoti Bisht, a retired Indian Army veteran with 14 years of diverse experience in operations and supply chain. Having led supply chain operations in challenging areas like Ladakh and Kargil in the Army, she currently serves as the Site Lead for Amazon's Sort Center in Eastern India, focusing on enhancing customer experience, aligning operational goals, and driving team performance. Let’s get to know her story better!
What inspired you to transfer from a veteran background to the corporate world??
I realized that the skills I honed during my military career in operations, project management, and people leadership could be applied to the fast-paced corporate world, where I could continue to grow and contribute in new ways. I saw an exciting opportunity to combine my military training with the best practices in supply chain management, technology, and people development.??
How has Amazon helped you with this transition??
Amazon has played a pivotal role in facilitating my transition from the military and various other sectors into the corporate world, providing both the structure and resources to leverage my experience effectively. As someone who has always thrived in high-pressure, results-driven environments—much like my military service—Amazon's emphasis on continuous learning and development has been a natural fit.?
Additionally, Amazon’s culture of innovation and "Ownership" aligns deeply with the values I developed during my time in the Indian Army. The organization’s strong focus on taking full responsibility for outcomes has helped me translate my military leadership skills into a corporate setting.?
In summary, Amazon has helped me bridge the gap between my military background and the corporate world through a combination of structured training, a supportive and collaborative environment, and leadership opportunities that allow me to continue growing both personally and professionally.?
How have your experiences in the Indian Army shaped your approach to operations and supply chain management in a corporate setting??
My experiences in the Indian Army managing logistics and supply chain operations in some of the most challenging and remote locations taught me the importance of meticulous planning, adaptability, and maintaining high standards of performance under limited resources. These principles have directly influenced how I approach supply chain management in the corporate world.?
One of the most valuable lessons from my Army career has been the ability to manage complex, high-stakes operations while staying calm under pressure—skills that are crucial in the fast-paced corporate environment at Amazon, where operational demands can change rapidly, especially during peak times like major sales events.
The Army taught me the importance of leadership and team dynamics, which have shaped my approach to people management. I focus on building a culture of ownership, collaboration, and accountability within my team, encouraging them to take initiative and solve problems independently while providing the necessary support and mentorship. The Army also instilled a strong sense of discipline, accountability, and strategic thinking, which are core to my work today.?
As the Site Lead for Amazon’s largest Sort Center in Eastern India, I was responsible for ensuring smooth operations during the Great Indian Festival, one of the busiest times of the year. The critical leadership lesson I learned in the Army was the importance of maintaining clear communication in high-pressure situations, which I applied here. By ensuring constant updates between shifts and keeping everyone aligned on key metrics and objectives, it facilitated a more coordinated effort across all departments. As a result, we were able to address the operational challenges efficiently, meet our performance targets, and ensure that customer deliveries were completed on or before time.?Under my leadership, through meticulous planning, execution, and seamless coordination with all stakeholders, the site not only surpassed its targets but also reached an impressive milestone, processing a substantial number of orders and bringing smiles to customers.
What is your approach to developing your team’s strengths and nurturing future leaders??
I begin by identifying each team member’s unique strengths and tailoring their development paths accordingly, whether through stretch projects or leadership opportunities. My approach to nurturing future leaders focuses on empowerment, ownership, and continuous learning.
I instill a strong sense of ownership in my team, encouraging them to take responsibility for their work and outcomes. By encouraging an open feedback loop, I create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and asking for guidance, allowing individuals to continually improve and contribute to the overall success of the team and organization.

I also emphasize mentorship, providing guidance, and supporting team members in their personal and professional growth. Ultimately, I believe that when we empower and invest in our people, we foster a culture of accountability, growth, and leadership for the future.?
What goals are you most passionate about achieving at Amazon in the coming year??
In the coming year, my goals are focused on enhancing customer experience, driving operational efficiency, and developing future leaders within my team. My primary objective is to optimize operations to ensure timely, accurate deliveries that consistently exceed CX.
I aim to streamline processes to improve delivery speed and quality, especially during peak periods like Prime Day and the Great Indian Festival, by improving operational efficiency. My objective is to ensure that our Sort Center runs at peak efficiency by implementing best practices and exploring automation to enhance throughput and maximize resource utilization.
What advice would you give to veterans or others with military experience who are considering a corporate career??
Leverage your leadership skills gained in the military that are highly transferable to the corporate world. I recommend veterans invest in learning and reskilling to ensure they stay ahead in their chosen corporate field. Many companies, including Amazon, offer learning and development opportunities to ease this transition.
Adapt to the corporate culture of collaboration across various functions and departments. At Amazon, I learned to work cross-functionally, engaging with various teams to achieve operational goals with the core Army skills of accountability and discipline that remain vital.
Staying persistent and focused on long-term goals helped me navigate the early challenges. Patience, resilience, and the ability to learn from feedback—values instilled during my military service—were crucial for adapting to the corporate world.?
Veterans should also look for veteran-specific networks, such as “Warriors@Amazon," a core group of veterans in Amazon, or support groups that connect former military personnel with corporate professionals. They should also quickly adapt to technology that is relevant to their chosen industry.?
