Justyna Kozielec, Compliance Operations Manager

What is your role at MoneyGram?

At MoneyGram, my role is the Compliance Operations Manager. Over the years, this position has been known by various titles, but I have always advocated for the term "Compliance Operations" for my team from the moment I stepped into a managerial role.

For background, how did you get started at MoneyGram?

I began my journey at MoneyGram in 2014. Initially, I wasn't even aware that MoneyGram was establishing an office in Warsaw. A headhunter reached out to me regarding the role of Supervisor for Transaction Holds. At that time, I was working as a Team Leader at a logistics company and wasn't actively seeking a change. However, I decided to explore the opportunity, and nearly a decade later, here I am!

The three words to describe yourself are:

The three words that best describe me are curious, persistent, and funny – though admittedly, not everyone might share that last sentiment!

What is the biggest business challenge for your department in 2024?

In 2024, the biggest business challenge for Compliance Operations department will be continuing to strengthen and expand our partnerships while maintaining the high level of service that defines us. We've been working closely with some of our largest partners, particularly in the area of compliance holds, and our goal is to further solidify these relationships. Compliance Operations is committed to providing personalized, high-priority support, and we aim to deliver these services with the best possible service level agreements (SLAs). This dedication to excellence is what sets us apart and what our partners value most about our collaboration. Ultimately, our focus remains on ensuring that consumers receive their money without unnecessary delays, reflecting our commitment to both our partners and their customers.

What was the biggest positive surprise you experienced at MoneyGram so far?

The biggest positive surprise I've encountered at MoneyGram has undoubtedly been the people and the company culture. From day one, my team felt like family. No matter how challenging the work got, it always felt manageable because of the supportive colleagues I had around me. This truly embodies the essence of the positive environment I mentioned earlier. Regarding the company culture, MoneyGram diverges from the typical corporate mold, which is a significant draw for me, and I'm sure for others as well. Here, respect for each other's ideas and initiatives is paramount, regardless of one's position. Everyone is approachable, which fosters openness and broadens our perspectives. This inclusive and supportive environment has been a delightful surprise.

How would you describe the challenges of managing such a culturally diverse team?

I'd actually question whether managing a culturally diverse team should be viewed as a challenge at all. Isn't this just part of working with people in general? Everyone has their unique perspectives and work styles, and what works well for one person might not for another. The real task, which can be challenging for some, is to understand and embrace these differences, regardless of cultural background, and turn them into strengths rather than conflicts or complications.

Being part of such a diverse team is not just about facing challenges; it's also about seizing opportunities. It opens doors to learning and discovering solutions that might not have been considered otherwise. So, in my view, it's not a challenge – it's a privilege and a fantastic opportunity.

Would you like to share any specific leadership lesson that was meaningful for you?

Certainly! Leading at MoneyGram has taught me valuable lessons every day. Some of these lessons were quite challenging and stressful, enough to fill a book! However, the most significant lesson I've learned from nearly two decades of working with and leading people is surprisingly simple: treat people well, and they will reciprocate. Show genuine humanity, and your team will follow your lead. It's crucial to clearly communicate your expectations and provide opportunities for growth. Respect isn't something you can force; it’s earned through how you treat others.

How do you achieve work-life balance?

Very good question! For many years MoneyGram was my second home. I simply liked spending time in the office and got to spend too much of it there. The work was exciting and bringing a lot of satisfaction, so it was very easy to forget that there is life to live outside of it. It took few years for me to realize I need to find a proper balance and I decided to adopt an animal which would remind me that there is a time to go home, relax and recharge. It worked! Now I’m a proud “mum” of three cats! ??

Then, the pandemic brought further changes to the world and to my life. Moving to Portugal and being surrounded by people who remind me of the importance of enjoying life added another layer to my understanding of work-life balance. These experiences have taught me there's much more to life than just work.

What is your superpower?

Someone once told me that I'm a powerhouse. It seems I can handle a lot, adapt to different situations, and find solutions to challenges. Looking back at my career, I think that might actually be true.
