Justified True Belief

Justified True Belief

“The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.”?- Socrates

Epistemology: A theory of knowledge that is concerned with the mind's relation to reality.?

Belief: Acceptance that a statement is true or in the existence of something.

Hypothesis: A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

Intuition: The ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.

Conviction: A strong belief or opinion.

G?del's Theorem: In any reasonable system of logic (ie. mathematical) there will always be true statements (scenarios or equations) that cannot be proved.

Epistemology is the study and pursuit of Knowledge. It is the establishing of what is truly known as opposed to what is thought to be known. By epistemological definition, Knowledge consists of Truth, Belief, and Justification. Justified True Belief.” Truth, Belief, and Justification are collectively mandatory for True Knowledge of True Facts to Exist. None of them alone is sufficient to be considered knowledge.

Justified True Belief

True

The first criteria, Truth, requires assertions agree with Facts. It presupposes that evidence (facts) exists, proving the truth. This is oftentimes difficult, if not impossible. G?del's Theorem states (allows) there will always exist true statements that cannot be proven. Philosophers reconcile this nuance by determining “Truth may exist where or when something becomes accepted or recognized as true from An Objective Perspective.”

(Objective - Definition: A tendency to view events or persons as apart from oneself and one's own interest or feelings.)

Belief

In Epistemology, Beliefs are defined as the conceptions individuals hold regarding the nature and status of what they know. Ideally, Belief is the acceptance of a proposition which demands rejection of whatever conflicts with it. This is no simple proposition. The price of Belief is the act of willingly forsaking all other possibilities. Individual belief is often a collection of information deduced subconsciously and consciously into an acceptable hypothesis, presenting as an idea or a stated position.?

Justification

Justification allows for increased veracity and accuracy of Belief. There are philosophers (philosophy) who Believe the only true Justification for Belief is absolute demonstrability. There is a second position amongst the philosophy community which states “Some truths may be justified through their self-evidence (reason over proof) and or by human observation, which is by its very nature is subjective, at best.”

(Subjective - Definition: Based on personal opinions and feelings rather than on facts.)

-Food For Thought-

How does knowledge exist if it cannot be absolutely and finely articulated?

Perhaps knowledge is really a probability in it’s relative existence.?

“People will generally accept facts as truth only if the facts agree with what they already believe.” - Andy Rooney
