Justice System

Justice System?

?When we struggle to come up with a solution to a difficult problem, it’s often time to “reframe the argument”. First, there was the Restorative Justice movement. Then it was Bail Reform. Now it’s Sentencing Reform which proposes a number of problems on so many levels. Here’s a thought; instead of the Criminal Justice System, we start calling it the Victims Justice System. After all, isn’t it why we are there to see that Justice is?delivered fairly and protects the innocent??

?Most of our most recent gun violence episodes were the work of a lone gunman. 1 man 23 murdered, 11 murdered, 27 murdered and so many more. Let’s do the math. One-man murders 23 people.?Each of those 23 people has significant people in their lives. They may have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, an average of 4 siblings, 8 aunts and uncles, 32 cousins,?and an average of 6 close friends.?They live in a community of 25,000 people. Let’s just stop there. One gunman has created not only 23 victims but 26,173 not to mention the hundreds of thousands of people who are triggered by this incident and the entire US news-watching public.?When it comes to the math – I get a slightly different number.?

1 gunman, 26,173 immediate victims–?people whose lives are changed forever.?Hmmmm. Is that how the scales of Justice balance? For too long the voices of victims have been ignored, marginalized, and relegated to the back row. It’s time to stop these ridiculous ideologies developed in a think tank. This is not an experiment. All our lives are being jeopardized?by people who know not what they think. I do know. I have been the leader of the largest victim service organization in PA and maybe the country for 20 years.[1]? We have served millions of crime victims over those years. Stop the madness. Give victims a voice and victims service organizations along with grassroots efforts the funding they need to affect systemic change in their own communities. They are the real experts. I know. I’ve seen it.

Wow! I never thought to do the math to see how many victims there truly are in just one act of violence. Thanks for bringing awareness.
