Just you wait: there's one terrific thing about Hamilton. It's not the songs.

Just you wait: there's one terrific thing about Hamilton. It's not the songs.

This is nothing to do with politics or journalism. I just loved this show so much I wanted to write about it. Also not everything should be about work or networking, even on LinkedIn. #notworking

Of course I knew all the words to all the songs in Hamilton. They are, as Melissa Singer wrote last week, totally earwormish. The performers are, though not Lin-Manuel Miranda, Awesome! Wow! as King George might have said. But at the Sunday matinee, there was one other really big factor to my over-the-top enjoyment. The other people. The audience. The fans and superfans. We'd obeyed the surprise email from the Lyric Theatre at 8.02am on Sunday (I mean, who reads their emails then?) and arrived early. The sea of people streamed up the stairs to the Lyric, QRed in, answers polite questions about the state of our health, spent money on programs and merch. Some of the audience brought in so much food into the theatre, it was clear they hadn't eaten for weeks. But we were cheerful and kind to each other. We didn't reprimand those in the crowd who weren't wearing masks (even when sitting right next to us and coughing up lungs).

But from the moment we sat, all of us beaming at the stage, the crowd went wild.

Here were actors we had never heard of (except in prepublicity for the show) and every appearance of a new performer was greeted with howls and whoops and cheers as it was Miranda himself. Special mention goes to Victory Nduke whose supporters shook the walls. That includes me. I'd never set eyes on him before but everyone else's enthusiasm set me off. Also, quick Google in the interval, Iosefa Laga'aia is DEFINITELY the child of Jay Laga'aia. third of eight with Sandie Jane Laga'aia. The dancing was the kind of dancing where you watch and wonder, how do these people not hurt themselves?

Yes, it is also true that many of those in the audience sang along. Not me. Well, not for all of it. Would be good if they had surtitles for those who are unsure of the words (people behind me, please do not sing unless you actually know the lyrics. This may seem harsh but you undid my happily-singing-along mellow).

Anyhow my headline was a lie. The songs are terrific. The actors do not include Lin-Manuel Miranda but Jason Arrow who began quietly but roared up a few minutes in. The costumes are glorious. And I wish Chloe Zuel (Eliza Hamilton) and Akina Edmonds (Angelica Schuyler) were my sisters. That would be enough.

You should know I did not get free tickets nor did I book months in advance (right now I have no faith in booking anything in advance. Still waiting for my Patti Smith refund). But the Lyric Theatre has an email list for new performances. My lucky email turned up one day in early March. Sign up. #notworking

Sounds fabulous, Jenna. I've been watching the Hamilton advertisement on TV and hope to attend a show.

I couldn't get through it—which I'm very sad about (tried to watch on streaming)! Maybe if Hamilton was an opera... ????♀?
