Just Be You
Facebook asks me ‘What is on your mind?’. What a question. What isn’t on my mind? Politics is on my mind. Science is on my mind. People are on my mind. My never-ending quest to know more and more people. It’s not enough to merely photograph them. I have to know who they are, as deep as I can get. I ask them questions, they tell me their stories, and I write them down, on top of their photographs, creating an indelible living memorial.
There’s no need to wait until death to learn about a person’s life. We can learn about them now. That’s kind of the point of these, these testimonials, these manifestos, these ODEs as I call them. I’m not just interested in your biography, I’m interested in your heart, your soul.
This is not for everyone. I understand that. And it’s not essential that I delve into every person I photograph in this way. But I will say this: the better I know you, the better your photos will turn out. Because your authenticity is tied to your willingness to be seen, and be known. If you try to hide, the camera will catch it. My mantra is ‘Just be you’. And I think that applies across the board, well beyond photography.
