The (not just) Steel City
Walk around Sheffield and you soon realise that the city is an eclectic mix of modern funky buildings, awe-inspiring traditional architecture and functional spaces. For me, the 10 most iconic landmarks / structures that stand out are;
1. The Diamond Building. An £81 million new Engineering Facility for The University of Sheffield, looks as funky on the inside as it looks bold on the outside.
2. Park Hill. 985 flats described as “streets in the sky” – built from 1958 to 1961 by the architects Ivor Smith and Jack Lynn. The development has polarised opinions for 6 decades and remains Europe's largest Grade 2 listed building
3. Sheffield Theatres. The largest theatre complex outside London. Across three auditoria: the Crucible, the Lyceum and the Crucible Studio - also home to World Championship Snooker.
4. Chatsworth House. Not technically in Sheffield, but it's close enough to claim it as one of our own.
5. The Cheese Grater. Its a cheese grater its a car park ....need I say more?
6. The Arts Tower. Built in 1966, the iconic building dominates the Sheffield Skyline, at 22 storeys, one of the UK's tallest academic buildings. Comes complete with a paternoster lift (which I was too scared to use).
7. Western Park Museum . Set in the grounds of a 5 hectare park, a great place to visit with the family. Discover the real story of Sheffield, from its geological roots to the people, politics and music that shaped the modern city.
8. Sheffield City Hall. Having churned out bands such as the Human League, Pulp, Arctic Monkies, ABC, Def Leppard, Heaven 17, Iron Maiden and Joe Cocker it's fitting that Sheffield has a premier music venue.
9. Factory 2050 A cutting-edge advanced manufacturing research facility. The revolutionary, glass-walled “reconfigurable factory” is at the heart of the University of Sheffield’s new advanced manufacturing campus.
10. Victoria Quays Tucked away in a corner of the city centre, a two minute walk from our offices this quiet spot is an oasis to just potter and get away from the hustle and bustle.

8 年Interesting that you cite 'Carbuncle' nominees, past and present, in your list; which perfectly illustrates the disconnect between the 'City of Sheffield' that local people think they want and the 'Sheffield City Region' that the local Investment and Property market judges is needed to drive growth. It's a perspective. Take the Diamond; it's clearly insensitive over-development of a small site, in a historic church yard setting, via a huge well-dressed box. But then a high performing, quality University Department needs that floorspace. So; it's a bid retailer style box, hopefully CEEQUAL and BREEAM 'Outstanding' with a bi-annually reviewed Display Energy Certificate. We can benchmark it against the Home Office premises at Millsands and the M&S Store on Eccie Road, we can learn from it; and when its functional and performance life is over we can recycle it away. It's great 'interim use' and 'engineered' property; and it even looks good when coming up from West Bar, (seen best when we are stuck in the traffic jam that is destroying the street-level environmental quality around The Diamond). I wouldn't call it Architecture, myself, because it does not tick all the boxes. Right building, Right Time, Wrong Setting. My son was born in 'Jessops', so it's good to see the front door was retained; and that the University moved the Red Light (ironically)Area downhill.
