Is Just Saying "Thanks" To Vets Really Enough?

Today is Veterans Day and we are supposed to "thank our vets for their service" to America, but is that really enough? Is that a substantial enough way to show them our true appreciation? Isn't there more we should be doing?
Vets returning from war or even peaceful enlistment often return to a country that has largely moved on without them in the economy and workforce. Many see them as men and women sent away to do a difficult and dirty job that later returns many of them to a civilian life where they are considered to offer few easily transferable skills for jobs in a highly skilled and competitive labor pool.
So many employers often receive and pass over our vet's resumes noting a break in their employment history (2 - 4 years or more) and holding on to the thought that they probably need to be trained or re-trained in some specific skill set needed by a new employer. Too time consuming. Too expensive. Too much of a project to undertake.
More often than not vets get rejected and remain unemployed for a long time. Some thanks! These brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way and - in many cases - were severely wounded in battle only to be told by employers, "thanks but no thanks." They deserve much better. They deserve much more. They deserve a chance to return home and succeed just like the rest of us. Because, in most cases they have done a lot more for the rest of us. More than we can ever repay them in dollars and still we owe them, BIG TIME! Give them a job and a chance to do better.
