Why We Need Roofers in the Classroom: A Recruiter's Plea for Change

As a recruiter specialising in the Roofing & Cladding industry, I spend a lot of time talking to talented individuals looking for their next opportunity. But there's one sector where I consistently face a challenge: roofing.

The roofing industry is crucial. It protects our homes and businesses, and skilled roofers are in high demand. Yet, attracting new talent is proving difficult. Why? Because the industry's image often gets overshadowed by other skilled trades.

Here's the disconnect I see:

• In schools: Career guidance often steers students towards engineering or architecture, neglecting the incredible opportunities in the skilled trades like roofing.
• Student perception: Roofing might be perceived as a physically demanding job with limited career growth.

This needs to change. Here's how education can bridge the gap:

• Introduce roofing basics: Integrate roofing concepts into relevant classes like construction or engineering.
• Showcase career paths: Highlight the diverse roles within roofing, from installation and maintenance to project management and inspection.
• Emphasize the tech revolution: The roofing industry is embracing technology with drones, advanced materials, and software.

The benefits are clear:

• A stronger industry: By exposing students to roofing careers early on, we can build a robust talent pipeline for the future.
• Skilled workforce: Proper education equips individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field.
• Fulfilling careers: Roofing offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Recruiters like myself can play a role too: Partner with schools to conduct career talks or offer internship opportunities.

Let's change the narrative. The roofing industry offers a rewarding career path – one that deserves a place in our classrooms.
