Dear Friend,

In the 1960s, Swedish engineer Phillip Olsson invented a new suite of symbols for audio recording and playback equipment.

You, and everyone in the world who regularly interacts with technology knows the symbols instinctively, and uses them daily, even if you’ve never seen a reel-to-reel tape recorder.

A sideways triangle, two vertical lines, two arrows pointing left or right, and of course, the solid square. These simple, elegant design elements are today understood to mean play, pause, rewind, fast forward, or stop.

Their ubiquity once again showcases the power of visuals to communicate ideas faster, clearer, and across barriers of language and understanding.

Our visual strategists do the same thing; leveraging and even inventing new icons to symbolize complex ideas for immediate comprehension.

The impact of thinking visually as a team may not change the way the world listens to music, but I like to think it’s changing the way the world works.
