JUST PONDERING ON THE ESSENCE OF MAUNDY THURSDAY AND A PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE

Today April 9, 2020 for Christians all over the world is Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the washing of the feet and the Last Supper or Lord’s Supper that Jesus had with His disciples. It is the day Jesus established the sacrament of Holy Communion prior to his arrest. In this feast, Jesus was presenting a theme that the disciples will remember Him by after He is gone physically. Maundy is an Anglo-French word derived from the Latin “mandatum,” which means “commandment.” In the Upper Room during the Last Supper, Jesus said to the disciples “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another.” (John 13:34) I pray we show love to one another during this period of the pandemic knowing we must play our part even as we trust God Almighty is in control.

I am constantly reminded of Pastor Rick Warren’s voice and rich insight on understanding the purpose of your life in his documentary on ‘The Purpose Driven Life’. His voice is a source of courage when struggling with life’s challenges like battling the COVID-19. It is comforting to read or listen to the Biblical reflections he presents in his philosophical thoughts on a purpose driven life. In celebrating the Holy Week, may we Christian or non-Christian, reflect on the purpose of our life on earth through faith and reason. May we give each day our all considering it could be the last. In this, LOVE will prevail.
