Just Learning is Simply No Learning

Just Learning is Simply No Learning

Learning is a continuous process and we keep learning through out our life. Especially in current era where there is plenty of things, materials, courses etc. are available on just merely a click and we observe new practices in terms of technology, academics, culture, behavior etc. almost every day. Being human and having an element of curiosity in our nature we usually tried to explore new ventures and give our crucial time to learn new skills. However, unfortunately, most of the things we learn are for a very short span of time and we frequently unable to retain them in our memory. To learn new things is great and our nature truly enjoy and accepts new things but as our brain consist of layers so every new layer cover up the previous layer and since we do not realize it; it becomes difficult to recall. Now the good news is if we just follow the following simple steps, we not only enhance our capacity to learn more but we will be able to retain it for a longer period of time.

  1. Self Belief
  2. Attention / Focus
  3. Association / Connection
  4. Review / Revision
  5. Practice / Output

STEP # 01 - SELF BELIEF: For anything we would like to achieve in life, first we need to believe in ourselves. We need to keep reminding our mind that we can do it because if we remain doubtful or shaky you will not be able to get desired learning outcomes. So it is very important for acquiring any new skill that we have firm believe over our abilities to learn it.

STEP # 02 - ATTENTION: To pay attention over what you are learning is a key to learn anything effectively. During any learning session if you are not paying 100% attention and getting distracted often then chances are you will lose plenty of information just after the session. Effective listening and focusing is essential for paying attention and it ultimately provides you edge to retain the information for a longer time. Keep remember that learning without attention is merely hearing and waste of time so try not to get distracted or lose attention during learning.

STEP # 03 - ASSOCIATION: This is a technique to process information more easily and getting familiar to new things quickly. One can describe it as learning with examples. Whenever we learn anything new; we should try to relate it with the things or information we already have or we may associate the new complex information with something easier we already know. For instance, we observe that the things we visualize are more easier to learn or recall as compared to other things. So this a very important tool to make connection with the new information and in this way we are able to retain the acquired information for long duration.

STEP # 04 - REVIEW: We can recall from our primary school that our teachers used to give us homework so that we can revise our lesson at home which helps us to learn it effectively. When we learn anything then there are chances that our brain holds the information for about a day or only for few hours and we try to recall it later we face difficulty. The lesson which we reviewed or revised timely, our brain holds it and gets familiar with it and in this way effectiveness of learning increases.

STEP # 05 - PRACTICE: Practice makes the man perfect. We know that knowledge without practice is merely a knowledge and we can not be benefitted from it. This is final and major step for learning. Do practice whatever you learn and try to implement it as much as possible in a way that it create difference in our lives. And also share with others once we learn anything because in this way we not only share something useful with others but also we enhance our ability to retain that information.

At last, before learning anything we should pause / stop for a moment and think why we should learn this new skill or information; how we create difference in our life from it and how we create difference in our community at large i.e. purpose for acquiring new skill or learning anything new should be clear in our mind.
Best of Luck!
