Just How Angry Does Job Search Ageism Make You When You're Over 40?

Do you get angry when you lose jobs because of employer ageism?

Does it make your blood boil when you're told you're overqualified?

Does smoke come out of your ears when employers hire someone younger and less expensive than you ... someone you could run circles around?

Why get angry, when you can avoid losing jobs because of employer ageism?

Here are a few ways to stop losing jobs due to employer age bias:

  1. Stop Trying To Show How Qualified You Are: In 2024, employers see many qualified candidates, so many that being qualified makes you average. But when you're 40, 50 or 60+ that gives employers you're qualified and expensive, a bad combination, giving them little reason to interview you or advance you in the hiring process. Clearly show hiring managers you're a lot more than just qualified, instead of a goal that you meet minimum requirements.
  2. Make The Job Description Be Written About You: When you get hiring managers to think of you first, before the job is posted, they're thinking of you as the job description. But when you apply through job boards, company websites, LinkedIn, recruiters, or networking after the job is posted, you'll be way too late to define the job description. Instead, you'll try to guess what the hiring manager's real needs are (because they aren't in the published job description).
  3. Utilize Your Network More Effectively: Contacting your network, asking about openings or to pass your resume to hiring managers has low odds of success. HR departments use programs and policies to recapture your resume into the resume databases that you've tried to avoid (unsuccessfully). Utilize your network more effectively for higher gain purposes, instead of asking the wrong people the wrong questions (and wondering why that isn't working well).

It's easy to get angry at employer ageism. It's easier for your job search if you make improvements that make you too good to ignore, regardless of age.
