Just Eat Takeaway.com’s Andrew Kenny On The Future Of On-Demand Retail

Just Eat Takeaway.com, in partnership with PA Consulting, recently released a report that suggests that the on-demand revolution, which has transformed the foodservice sector, will soon have a similar impact on the world of groceries and supermarkets.

The Rapid Evolution: The transformative future of on-demand grocery delivery and beyond, surveyed 4,000 people in four markets (the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain).

Spanish retail group Dia reported an increase in gross sales and adjusted core profit in the first half of its 2024 financial year, as it completed the process of transforming and simplifying its business.

Gross sales at Dia reached €3.3 billion, an increase of €73 million compared to the first half of 2023, the company noted in a statement.

Adjusted EBITDA increased 54% in the period to June, amounting to €128 million, with a margin increase of 1.6 percentage points.

Spanish retailer Mercadona plans to invest €150 million in lowering the prices of a range of products to help consumers save on their grocery baskets.

The latest initiative will see the retailer offering more than 1,000 discounted products in 2024, which will enable shoppers to save up to €150 per year from grocery purchases.

Mercadona added that it is seeking to reduce prices without affecting the quality of products.

José Manuel Burguera, director of pricing strategy for the company’s purchasing and prescription department, added, that these reductions would not be possible “without the efforts in productivity, profitability and management being made by the 104,000 workers and 3,000 suppliers, because only in this way can the entire chain be able to lower prices without affecting quality”.

Portugal's Sonae, which owns the food retail chain Continente, has reported consolidated turnover growth of 11%, to €4.3 billion, in the first half of its financial year.

Sonae attributed this growth to the good performance of its food retail arm MC and electronics chain Worten, as well as the integration of pet product retailer, Musti.

Consolidated EBITDA increased 18%, to €410 million, reflecting investment in portfolio development and solid performance in the food retail and telecommunications businesses, the company added.

Net profit attributable to shareholders grew 14% year on year amounting to €75 million.

I think we may be slightly overly optimistic about the potential for on-demand grocery delivery to reshape the grocery sector to the same extent as it has the foodservice industry.
