Just Breathe

If you're managing higher levels of stress these days, there's a tool we all have immediate access to: breathing.?

It might sound simple, but when done properly, breathing can make the difference between panic and resilience. Research shows that different emotions are associated with different forms of breathing.?

For example, when you feel anxious or angry, your breathing becomes irregular, short, and fast. When you feel joy or relaxation, your breathing will be regular, deep, and slow. And believe it or not, when you follow breathing patterns associated with different emotions, you begin to feel those corresponding emotions.?

So next time you're feeling stress start to bubble up, try changing the ratio of your inhale to exhale. When you inhale, your heart rate speeds up. When you exhale, it slows down. Take a few minutes and breathe in for a count of four and out for a count of eight — this will calm your nervous system and keep stress at bay. By tweaking your breathing, you'll start to feel a bit better.

The most helpful type of breathing depends on the person and situation though, and is inseparable from posture, muscletension, gaze… all of these can be a great starting point to regulate the level of arousal in the nervous system. Different things work for different people. More importantly though: these tools need to be made accessible IN the stress situation, as we are physiologically hardwired to forget what works for us. Self-regulation is a skillset that needs deliberate practice, better even training to be effective when needed. No tool can do its magic when being forgotten in critical moments.

Just breathe! ??????”When done properly…” I have discovered as a Breathing Coach, a lot of people don’t know how to breathe to their body’s full potential. This unfortunately increases chest breathing and elevates the fight or flight anxiety triggers. ?????? I have coached and witnessed, overwhelmed executives and employees recapture their control and composure once they are taught the “…done properly…” aspect. Once they understood their triggers and opened space for themselves to respond instead of react. It’s been a game changer, they can immediately focus on their breathe and quickly return to a more positive and productive place. Thanks for this article. ????????BreatheWorkz
