I am a frequent visitor of Expo 2020. Each time I visit, it just amuses me, not just its beauty, innovation, sustainability ideas but a lot more. Today I wanted you know that every single pavilion has its own importance.
Have you ever visited the Netherland Pavilion, located at the sustainability district? During my visit, even though as an architect I had never extended my thoughts on why the exterior of the pavilion looks so raw. I even heard people discussing negatively about the pavilion's aesthetics.
My take away was only about the theme; UNITING WATER, ENERGY AND FOOD. A huge cone dominated the floor. It produces water from the air and energy from the sun to grow food such as mushrooms and basil.
The designers, V8 Architects had a greater thought. It was not just the idea that has been contained inside, but the exterior shell that highlights its sustainability.
Do you know what is carbon foot print? A carbon footprint is?the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.
The construction materials were locally rented and are reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable. The temporary circular climate system has received the “Sustainable Construction Project of the year” award at “The Big 5 Impact Awards”, which is a prestigious construction award show in the UAE. The sustainability project was established with a holistic approach in terms of architecture, design, materialization and construction.
The structure was around 27m high including the cone structure. The skin being steel plates 20m in length, was a great task to install which contractor Expomobilia together with V8 architects, Witteveen+Bos and Kossmanndejong executed it very well. Hats off to the team. (https://dutchdubai.com/2021-construction-award/)

2 年Thank you for the insight of this amazing and sustainable pavillon, Rubeena MK. Congratulations @V8 Architects.
I guarantee that construction projects are technically viable, aesthetically appealing, economically prudent, market-responsive, and implemented to the highest standards of quality. Clients expectations. Nothing less.
3 年Dear Rubeena, dear Andy and all the members of the group. It was my pleasure to meet you and to explain you in detail more about the period of construction. The Netherland pavilion as a temporary structure is more than unique in all its parts. It was never built anywhere before. Sustainability in this way is not a catchphrase.
