Just because you can, doesn't mean you should

Interviewing for a new job is easier than ever. Everything is done remotely so you can complete a full interview process from the comfort of wherever you happen to be working from. Quite often you don’t even need to make excuses or book time off work – you just set yourself to 'busy' for an hour on Slack, switch screens and off you go. This has given rise to candidates trying to manage an increasingly large number of concurrent interview processes.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing as we will always try to give candidates options based on what they’re looking for, but we’ve had instances during the lockdowns where candidates are involved in 7 or 8 interview processes at once, just because they can.

What that ends up doing is wasting everyone’s time because with the best will in the world, you can’t be giving your all to that many interviews at once, often whilst still holding down a full time job, plus home-schooling and whatever else you need to do.

Where you work will have an enormous impact on your life, so searching for that job should be treated with the respect it deserves. Just because you can interview at 10 places all at the same time, doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

Work with a good recruiter, talk to them about what you want and allow them to tailor the search for you with care and attention.
