Just because it is, doesn’t mean it should be

I took pause yesterday on ‘International Women’s Day’ (IWD) to reflect upon the contribution so many women have made in this country and abroad, in promoting an equal and inclusive society. These women were bold, and brave, and dared to challenge the status quo.
#choosetochallenge
We must always question, and seek out what’s right, equal, and fair.
With this year’s IWD theme ‘Choose to Challenge’ in mind, this edition of Handpicked focuses on exactly that – the people and organisations who go beyond the expected, and challenge in order to change.
In my blog, I talk about the need to lose labels. Let’s not typecast people by gender, age, religion, or anything else for that matter. People are people, it’s as simple as that.
I talk to some aspiring entrepreneurs through Spill the Beans ‘Pitchfest’ who are daring to challenge preconceived ideas on what young people can achieve. Age is no barrier; their capabilities speak for themselves. My unwavering advice relevant to any business – stay close to your customers.
And when speaking at a recent Career's forum facilitated by ‘The Australian’ I was reminded by the audience of school aged women about the importance of finding passion and purpose. I encouraged them to have the willingness to challenge themselves and others in the pursuit of meaningful goals.
I recently spent time with SmartCompany, reflecting upon the almost 20 years since founding RedBalloon. As I shared, running a business is about running your own race, making the right choices for you, living by your own rules, and not letting the language you use hold you back.
There is still so much to challenge, and much more change to be made. But if we all take heed, and do what’s right and fair, we might just start to get somewhere.

3 年Naomi Simson I support you and all women with dignity. If they hold the same position as a man .. The pay should be the same. And this should be written in all documents of all employers. No loopholes. This should all be on?state level.
