Just another story or is there more?
It was during the summer of 1976 in Plainview Texas. A very young kid had gone to Plainview Texas to work the fields with his father and younger brother. My father had been fired from his 22 yrs. job as the film projectionist at the Aztec Theater in Eagle Pass. My father has a small TV and radio repair shop that was not doing very well.
My father had heard that working in the fields might provide enough money to get us through the rough times. The days were very early and very late. The work was outside in the heat and physical labor.
One night after working all day. All the stores were closed. This young kid found himself filling an empty one liter coke bottle with water from a water hose and adding some powdered tea. This was for tomorrow’s workday. I felt so alone and wanted to cry, but I held my tears inside. I asked God on why we were there? Why were we not home with the rest of the family? That moment a calm came over me and I understood. For Christ was there with me, filling that bottle for the next day. I no longer felt alone.
I often think about that, and many other days that changed my life. For that young kid was me. That day, that moment was just one of many trial runs for other dark days to come and how to handle them. It made me a better person, and a better man.
Today I look out from my seventh floor law office on Westheimer in Houston, Texas and truly believe. That it’s not really that far away from that night in Plainview Texas, for Christ is still with me.
I know that all of you have moments like this. I hope that you will share too.
