Not just another reading circle

Not just another reading circle

Just concluded a 6-session reading initiative over ten weeks, where 20-25 women from Brazil, Mexico and the US consistency participated in.

Book chosen: In Her Own Voice, by Jennifer McCollum .

Triggered by a little bit of luck, I won Jennifer's book in a raffle while attending virtually a WIL Institute conference last November.

I read the book over Thanksgiving and found it inspiring and helpful ... I felt an urge for sharing not only the book, but also the amazing stories and topics touched on during the conference.

And so.. I recruited about ten women to get this reading circle started, and these women extended the invitation to others in their teams, and we kicked it off!

This circle became a safe space to discuss, give opinions, share stories and tips .. there was so much in common in our stories and feelings, regardless of age, country, and occupation.

As we read the book, we made small commitments and changes to overcome the hurdles described by Jennifer.

I enjoyed watching and learning from these women, each of them is special, and I admire their vulnerability and courage.

Relationships were developed, and more importantly, awareness and freedom were built so these women can commit to their own growth. We evolved from a reading circle to an allyship circle.

What's next? Well.. this group is touching base in six months to pulse where we stand.

We have started a chain reaction, many of us continue to share our learnings with others, we are giving back, and passing it on!

As for me? Coming up with an idea on how to expand this circle to some of the men in my work and personal life.

Stay tuned!

Itzia F., I remember when you reached out to me via LinkedIn to tell me about this effort you were leading, and now you have COMPLETED it. This message makes me so happy, and it is exactly the reason that I wrote the book. I wanted to expand our impact to women at all levels and in all roles globally. It is meant to build awareness and inspiration, so women can commit to their own growth going forward. You have facilitated that, and I know you also have included men in your efforts, making it all the more powerful. Congratulations, and thank you!
