Just Add Water

Just Add Water

This morning I needed a sponge. I went to our supply basket under the sink and pulled out a first-time purchase, a pop-up sponge. This is a dry, compacted, stiff sponge that in its current state does not serve a purpose, other than it doesn’t take up much storage space at my home (or on the store shelf). I turned on the faucet and watched the dry, stiff sponge slowly expand as it was absorbing the water. I felt like I was watching a magic trick in slow motion, witnessing each corner of the compressed, rigid sponge expand with each gulp it took from the kitchen spout. In a matter of 15 seconds, I witnessed a transformation of a rigid, non-functional object, to a fully functional, malleable tool that in its intended, fully-realized state, could be purposeful, useful, and resilient.

This 15-second task reminded me that we are all here to serve one another with our unique contributions. And so often, there are people and situations in our lives that have us believing that we shouldn’t ‘take up too much space’, at least not yet, so by default we let them decide or influence us if/when water should be added.

If you were to just add water to your unique potential today, what would you do differently? What potential do you want to uniquely bring and share? How would this make you feel?

I say, turn on the faucet and see what happens!
