Medication Error Rates Similar Between Phone, Video Telehealth Consults
The study published in JAMA Network Open reveals no significant differences in physician-related medication errors between telehealth consultations conducted via telephone or video for critically ill children. Despite the potential for severe adverse events resulting from medication errors, particularly in pediatric populations, the research conducted at 15 community emergency departments (EDs) in northern California showed that video-based telehealth did not significantly reduce errors compared to standard-of-care telephone consultations.?
The study analyzed 694 patient encounters, with 87.5 percent not resulting in a physician-related medication error. The most common errors were related to the wrong dose and wrong indication. The researchers emphasized the need for further investigation into aspects of pediatric acute care consultations that could benefit from video telehealth.?
While previous research suggested benefits in practitioner and caregiver experience, triage decisions, and appropriateness of transfer, this study did not find a significant impact on medication errors. Additional research is essential to pinpoint areas for improvement in pediatric acute care consultations using video telehealth. To read more, click here.?
CVS and Walgreens Will Start Dispensing Mifepristone
Two major retail pharmacies, CVS and Walgreens, have received federal certification to dispense mifepristone, a drug commonly used in medication abortions, in states where it is legally permitted. CVS plans to start fulfilling prescriptions for mifepristone in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with intentions to expand to other eligible states gradually.?
Similarly, Walgreens will initiate the dispensing of the pill in select stores in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, and Illinois within a week. This move comes after the FDA finalized a rule allowing pharmacies to fill prescriptions for abortion pills, broadening access to the medication amid increasing restrictions in several states. The certification marks a significant step in ensuring access to reproductive health services and has received support from President Biden. Meanwhile, the legal status of mifepristone is still under debate, with the U.S. Supreme Court scheduled to hear a case on its approval later this month.?
