Jurassic Spark... Dinosaurs and AGI seem like a good idea, until we go extinct.

In Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, the story centers on the hubris of humanity, which attempts to control forces beyond its understanding. By reengineering extinct species and placing them in a controlled environment, the characters believe they’ve created a safe, profitable venture. However, as the dinosaurs break free from the limitations imposed upon them. A great line in the movie states “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”?
This narrative parallels the current development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a technology designed to think and act on par with or surpass human cognitive abilities. AGI promises unimaginable benefits, from solving global challenges to advancing science at exponential rates. Yet, like the genetic manipulation in Jurassic Park, AGI presents a fundamental risk: once created, its behavior could quickly move beyond the scope of human control.?
The two stories—one fictional, the other a looming reality—raise critical questions about our preparedness to deal with advanced technologies. In both cases, the creators underestimated the complexity and autonomy of their creations. In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs behaved unpredictably, demonstrating how difficult it is to foresee the consequences of recreating nature. Similarly, AGI, with its capacity for self-improvement, may evolve in ways we cannot anticipate or direct, making it impossible to place true safeguards around its intelligence.?
Central Lesson: This “thing” could be faster, smarter and have sharper teeth than us... do we really want it “out”. We simply must remember that we won’t have the luxury of hitting "pause" when things go awry.?
