THAT DOWNTOWN BUSY SKY
- The king is in the house
An essay by Michael Zizis - November 16, 2018
This week Jupiter left Scorpio and ingresses into the sign of Sagittarius. He will reside on his natural throne until December 2019.
For further study - at the end of this work; There are URL’s for other starry transformations this week - Venus turns direct - Mercury turns retrograde - Mars enters Pisces.
JUPITER: presenting His Majesty
Jupiter in his majestic nearly circular journey around the sun spends about a year in each sign of the zodiac. He completes his circuit every twelve years.
Over this new twelve month cycle, look to what opens up for you – and becomes more like joy, movement, and certainly less stress. His previous return to Sagittarius was November 2006 to December 2007. What was improving then? What changed for the better? What surprisingly didn’t get worse? You are more aware now – things can get even more positive based on your increasing awareness.
OLD FATSO REVEALED
Jupiter is that big gas ball that sucked up most of the matter in our solar system. All the other planets could fit inside him with room to spare.
He is symbolized as the new king of the gods. When he overthrew his father Kronos - the effect was to give his twelve fellow gods many opportunities. Everyone - gods and goddesses alike - in the new pantheon could openly express his or her joy caprice and wrath. Notice the democracy liberated by this mythic victory.
We, in astrology, practice the art of association. This ‘planet,’ this ‘house,’ this ’sign,’ is associated with these ever expanding meanings.
This brain game is similar to someone telling you that you look like his or her uncle, or aunt, or brother, or that movie star. This is the brain associating you with not-you. This reminds me of that. We create a memory and then compare it to “X”.
Thus Jupiter {Zeus to the Greeks} is associated with broad justice, illumination, expansion, and inflation. He loves the enormous vistas of the 9th house and the sign of Sagittarius and the higher mind. Jupiter in the 9th house is also the place of self-righteous holy-book hurling {any religion} and religious, war-mongering, judgmental preachers.
In the spirit of Hunter S. Thompson, I can’t pretend not to be a partisan in politics. I want the greatest good for the greatest number. Education is always better than ignorance. When all people discover Mother Africa is truly our original home, think of the change it will bring. We are all African. I love our little blue planet and its incredible miraculous creatures and plants. I did my small part to end the brutal and unjust war in Vietnam by coming to Canada. No other nation in the world celebrates ignorance like my beloved United States. I pound this out on the keys just so you know.
In the previous year while Jupiter was in Scorpio {October 2017 to November 2018} he was about -among other things - the expansion of the underworld like the rise of Vladimir Putin and the election of the demagogic Donald Trump. Trump’s politics raised racists to equal status with humanitarians, and self-aggrandized himself into the hearts and minds of the gullible. Trump brought about the rise of women to power because of Jupiter’s symbols of justice and the law of unanticipated outcomes.
Scorpio demands all that is extraneous be cut away down to survival. Jupiter sharpened the tools to cut away themes of equality before the law, trades wars, slashing environmental protection laws, and cutting funding for health care among many other survival themes. The watery nature of Scorpio / Jupiter encouraged us to amplify and worship at the altar of the emotions. Our commitment to goodness towards others in need was sorely tested as many states saw the rise of the alt-right. Mass migration far from home for survival was very consistent with Jupiter {travel} and Scorpio {life or death}. The death of the Kepler space telescope and Saturn sojourner Cassini are keynotes of Jupiter {exploring distant shores} and Scorpio {endings}.
- The malaria mosquito - anopheles egyptica and its relatives could be made extinct around the world. Malaria kills about 500,000 people a year. Scientists announced during the transit of Jupiter thru Scorpio that genetically modified mosquitos and sterile male mosquitos could be released to bring about the collapse of the species and related diseases, like dengue and yellow fever. Whether we should cause the extinction of a species that is also the guardian of the equatorial rain forests, is an outstanding example of Jupiter {expansion} and species extinction {Scorpio}.

Jupiter is the thinking-person’s planet. As the guardian of the abstract mind, this planet rules higher learning, and bestows upon us a yen for exploring ideas, both intellectually and spiritually. Intellectually speaking, Jupiter assists us in formulating our ideology. In the more spiritual realm, Jupiter lords over religions and philosophy. A search for the answers is what Jupiter proposes, and if it means spanning the globe to find them, well, that’s probably why Jupiter also rules long-distance travel. In keeping with this theme, Jupiter compels us to assess our ethical and moral values; it also addresses our sense of optimism.
Luck and good fortune are associated with Jupiter for good reason. This is a kind and benevolent planet, one that wants us to grow and flourish in a positive way. Jupiter may be judge and jury, but it’s mostly an honorable helpmate, seeing to it that we’re on the right path. While our success, accomplishments and prosperity are all within Jupiter’s realm, this largesse can, at times, deteriorate into laziness and sloth (Jupiter, at its worst, is associated with weight gain!). More often than not, however, Jupiter will guide us down the primrose path.
Leisure time is also one of Jupiter’s pastimes. Sports of all kinds, games of chance and a stroll in the park with the family pet (Jupiter loves animals) –- these are all ruled by this planet. Finally, Jupiter often presages great wealth, material and otherwise. This is a good friend in the heavens!
JUPITER IN SAGITTARIUS
At home at last. Mr Big has come home, and is in his castle. Sagittarius {Greek: Toxotes – the archer} is the robust half-man half-horse. Think of the U.S. marines or Navy seals playfully goading each other, in that robust and muscular way. Think of the movie The Hurt Locker starring Jeremy Renner. The play in the barracks presents martial warriors blowing off steam by pushing each other thru wrestling and mocks threats. Welcome to Sagittarius’ horsey field of dreams. The early themes and scenes in the movie Fight Club are reminiscent of this embodied life force. We throw each other around like wrestlers and hyper-adrenalized debaters and no harm meant.
So many people now are sick of being worried and desiccated powerless taxpayers. Playing out bigotry, and racism is one result. These folks are vulnerable to someone who points at a powerless other group and sez there’s your problem!
Think of the crusader who overturns massive {Capricornian} corruption thru the law like Erin Brockovich. Her natural horoscope {time of birth unknown – so we use zero degree Aries rising} reveals Jupiter in 28 degrees Sagittarius at the top {career sector} of her chart. Anyone who becomes a hero – meaning sacrificing themselves for the community – then becomes famous thru media and/or publishing is symbolically exploring the themes of Jupiter in Sagittarius. Speaking of the natural {Aries rising} horoscope, the ninth house is the higher mind and remote journeys and encountering the foreigner – the xeni {Greek; xeni – not from our village}. We also say that the ninth house is the place of lawyers, the university mind, and publishing – as the opposite third house is writing. {The word publish means - Middle English (in the sense ‘make generally known’): from the stem of Old French puplier, from Latin publicare ‘make public’, from publicus …}
Demos {the public majority} and publishing is a way to make a view or a creative act - more universal. Bombast and rabble – rousing demagogues are also associated with Jupiter and the ninth house. In ancient astrology Jupiter is said to be in his house of joy, {like Mars in Aries or Mercury in Gemini} and they didn’t mean this was always a good condition. This can mean also that he is drunk on too much ambrosia or wine.
You can also consider Sagittarius as the introvert who sets off big cannons. It is not a showy sign in the same way as Leo might be. Nor does this sign shrink from the big statement. A cannon releases enormous explosive energy all at once. Leo shines and shines, and shines.
Think of people of like mind finding each other in the dark while Jupiter was in Scorpio. Then en masse they take to the streets in broad daylight when Jupiter goes into Sagittarius.
You may truly find that you become unstuck in some fundamental way while Jupiter is easy in this new sign. Yes, fortune favours the prepared mind. And, we are all able to discover that we are in some sense rising out of Scorpio’s deep water for this yearlong cycle.

But wait … there’ s more!
