What Are Junior Enterprises?
Junior Enterprises (JEs) are nonprofit, student-run organizations that bridge the gap between academic learning and the professional world. Following the learning-by-doing principle, these organizations provide university students with hands-on experience in real-world business environments, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges and cases in different scientific areas.
The concept originated in 1967 at ESSEC Business School in Paris and has since evolved into a global movement. Today, there are over 370 Junior Enterprises in Europe alone, encompassing more than 33,000 student entrepreneurs and generating an annual turnover exceeding €13 million. In Portugal, the movement includes 25 JEs across 13 universities, with more than 1,250 members contributing to a combined revenue of €500,000 in 2023.
Structured like professional consulting firms, JEs deliver services such as market research, strategy consulting, digital solutions, and event organization to clients ranging from small businesses to large corporations, and in the most diverse areas of expertise. The distinction, however, lies in their purpose: all profits are reinvested into training and development programs for their members, ensuring a continuous cycle of learning and growth.

Impact on Society
Junior Enterprises not only shape future professionals but also create meaningful societal impact. By offering affordable, high-quality business solutions, they support local communities and foster innovation in both small and large enterprises.
Take, for instance, the Portuguese JE Católica Consulting Linked, which collaborated with a public hospital in Lisbon to implement a digital transformation project. The initiative optimized resource use, improved operational efficiency, and enhanced patient care. Such projects demonstrate how JEs address real-world problems while nurturing the next generation of changemakers.
Moreover, the personal and professional development of JE members has a ripple effect on the broader economy. Through their involvement, students gain vital skills such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. These competencies make them highly sought after by employers, contributing to a more skilled and innovative workforce.

Junior Enterprises also advocate for youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. Events like the Junior Enterprise Day celebrate their contributions, bringing together policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to highlight the importance of experiential learning in shaping future leaders.
Junior Enterprises exemplify Aristotle's philosophy that "learning by doing" is the best way to prepare for real-world challenges. They not only equip students with practical skills and confidence but also contribute significantly to society through their projects and initiatives. In a world where adaptability and innovation are key, JEs are paving the way for a generation of professionals ready to tackle the complexities of the modern workforce.
