Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger read Abraham Lincoln’s General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston, Texas, which proclaimed freedom from slavery.?It is now celebrated as Juneteenth.
Unfortunately, over 150 years later, structural racism continues to be a problem in our country, and many people still have very limited knowledge of the history of slavery in our country.
This year, Juneteenth falls on a Saturday, and I encourage everyone to take some time to learn more.
Perhaps attended a Juneteenth celebration near where you live.?Learning the history of slavery and oppression in our country is an essential step in the effort to dismantle structural racism.
