The compliance deadline for California Senate Bill 553 is imminent. By July 1, 2024 most businesses and organizations in the state must comply with the requirements set forth. This legislation mandates the development and implementation of a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP) with the goal to up the standards across the board. These measures are meant to enhance security, and reduce workplace violence through proactive measures and planning.

Key Requirements of California Senate Bill 553

Among the conditions of compliance are:

Detailed Definitions: Defining key terms and types of workplace violence in a clear way that will keep all participants aligned.

A Customized Violence Prevention Plan: Employers are required to develop a written prevention plan tailored to their specific work areas and operations. This plan includes identifying responsible persons, methods for addressing violence hazards, and effective communication and training procedures.

Active Involvement of Employees: SB 553 calls for employee participation in developing and implementing strategies for identifying, evaluating, and correcting workplace violence hazards.

Emergency Procedures: Employers must establish procedures for responding to workplace violence emergencies, such as evacuation plans and methods for alerting employees about potential dangers.

Record-Keeping and Training: A system must be in place to maintain records of workplace violence incidents, training sessions, and hazard evaluations, ensuring ongoing compliance and effectiveness.
