It’s fair to say winter has descended. The days are shorter, the temperatures have dropped with it – and for some of us – comes the feeling of winter doom and gloom. ?

Some of us even experience Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD - yes it’s nicknamed).

The reduced sunlight can disrupt our body's natural rhythms, affecting the production of essential neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin, which play a role in regulating out mood and sleep. It can also bring about feelings of lethargy, sadness, and even a sense of gloom.?

So how can you combat the winter doom and gloom? Consider having your morning coffee or lunch break outdoors. Exercising – again outdoors if possible. Staying connected with friends, colleagues and loved ones. Lastly, why not try something new, just for a bit of fun!

S.A.D. Explained

Seasonal depression, also known as seasonal affective disorder or S.A.D., is a subtype of major depression with seasonal changes.

It typically onsets in the autumn, lasts through the winter months and improves in the spring. Dr. Gloria Petruzzelli, a clinical psychologist at UC Davis Health, explains the difference between "winter blues" and seasonal affective disorder, as well as the symptoms, warning signs and treatments.
