Musculoskeletal Disorders: An Accepted Consequence of Working in Construction?
Are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) just an accepted part of the construction industry, a toll we pay for our physical work? While mental health initiatives have seen progress, why haven't we tackled MSDs with the same intensity?
Most of us have likely felt the ache of a bad back or sore knees, either in ourselves, our loved ones, or our co-workers. Yet, should we simply accept this as the norm in construction, or is it time for a change?
It's clear: more must be accomplished to protect our physical bodies on the job.
Upcoming Webinar: Practical Steps to Combat MSDs
We’re hosting a webinar on the 1st of July with GKR Scaffolding and Soter Analytics to discuss practical steps that can be taken to address MSDs in the construction industry. Register here.
Research and Insights
Research by the Department of Work and Pensions, cited in this paper by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), has found that 46% of men aged 50-54 who left the construction industry did so due to ill-health.
That’s almost double the average for all other industries at 25%.
It’s clear more needs to be done to keep our workers in work.
Check out our blog that reflects on some of the things we can do to better support our workers: Supporting Our Ageing Workforce and Retaining Construction Talent.

Manual Handling Risk Assessment
The MAC tool is an essential resource for our industry. How often do you do a task-specific manual handling risk assessment? It's simple to use and gives you a better evaluation of manual handling risk: HSE Manual Handling Risk Assessment Tool.
Strategic Approach
For a more strategic approach, check out the Business in the Community toolkit: Musculoskeletal Health Toolkit HERE.
Health Surveillance
We don’t have a specific way of undertaking health surveillance for MSDs, but the HSE has a body mapping tool that can be very useful: HSE Body Mapping Questionnaire.

Health and wellbeing at work is a vast subject and with so many potential opportunities for improvement, it’s difficult to know what to prioritise.
